Animaniacs is an American animated comedy musical streaming television series developed by Wellesley Wild and Steven Spielberg for the streaming service Hulu. It is a revival of the original 1993 television series of the same name. The classic cast comes back from the classic series.
Why It's Still Zany To The Max
- It not only stays faithful to the original series, it continues the Animaniacs series from where the original left off as shown in the opening sequence to the first episode. It also was able to get away with content that most modern kid shows aren't able to do such as satirizing and mocking some issues of the modern issues around the times like the trend of relying on reboots and use of some bad words (said by Brain on "Of Mices and Memes").
- There are some Memorable soundtrack and songs.
- Top-notch animation and art style for even the early-2020s standards which are upgrades of the original series.
- Good songs in the series like: “The Catch-Up Song” “Reboot It” “Bonding” “The Cutening” “Rap Battle” “Be Like Me” “A Zit” “FLOTUS, FLOTUS, What Do You Know About Us?” “Yakko’s Big Song”
- Decent voice acting, with the original cast reprising their roles.
- The comedy, the musical and the slapstick stays true to source material. It also was more comical, cartoonier and a lot more slapsticky than the original.
- Alot of likable characters, including Yakko, Wakko and Dot, especially Pinky and the Brain.
- The Warner Siblings have earned character development going from crazy characters who used to annoy people to characters that find hard to stand the changes of the modern times.
- Sure, Some new characters are awful, but some of the new characters that are least pretty good such as Nora Rita Norita.
- The opening sequence is creative and well done, as a nice throwback to the original series' intro. The theme song is still catchy, but with modified lyrics and the jazzy-remixed version.
- Many funny moments, as well as tons of slapstick comedy moments. The running gags are still very impressive.
- Unique pop culture references.
- There were memorable quotes that are very faithful and true to the source material.
Bad Qualities
- While Spielberg is involved in the reboot, the original series creator, Tom Ruegger has not been brought back, nor have the original series producers Rich Arons, Sherri Stoner, Rusty Mills, or Peter Hastings. While the new series team does a good job recreating the show's humor in their own way, the series could be greatly improved with more of the original series members.
- Slappy, Skippy, Hello Nurse, Minerva Mink, Thaddeus Plotz, Buttons, Mindy, Rita, Runt and most of the other supporting characters from the original show do not appear regularly like they used to, they all did return in a gag from the episode, “Good Warner Hunting”. Though Dr. Scratchnsniff returned, but to an abrupt start where he had food poisoning. Ouch! Maybe, who knows? Unfortunately, the rest of the original supporting characters will never be shown again after the series' conclusion back in 2023.
- Speaking of Hello Nurse, the main reason why she was removed from the main cast was due to concerns that she would be considered "sexist" by Moral Guardians or the general public, as well as other concerns that she might be an outdated character for the revival series as well. As for the in-show reason as to why she was the same nurse who joined Doctors Without Borders. This removal is ironic since both the original series and the series mocked those kinds of people before. This decision asks the question: How did the Warner Bros. executives or someone else miss the point that Animaniacs is supposed to be a satirical kids' cartoon!?
- Some of these characters were voiced by the original show's producers (Slappy by Sherri Stoner, for example), or their relatives (Skippy was voiced by Ruegger's son), which could be a factor in whether or not they might return...
- Adding onto the fact above, some of the new characters are downright terrible characters. Starbox is a stereotypical "take over the world" alien who is a rip-off of Brain, Cindy is just a spoiled brat who wants Starbox as a pet so much that she crosses lines not even Elmyra Duff from Tiny Toon Adventures would cross, and The Gnome is a selfish jerk who always shouts and talks too loudly.
- Due to today's political climate on some entertainment as of right now, the "Hello Nurse" joke that both Yakko and Wakko are known for has never been used that much anymore.
- Despite Yakko and Wakko no longer flirting with women, Dot still hits on males sometimes, which is a double standard and still counts as one just like the former. Let alone have her end up getting her comeuppance one of these days.
- The aforementioned mansplaining and manspreading can be seen as sexist towards women and men respectively (especially in Dot's case), proving that these jokes don't work for a modern-day reboot because they are not funny and they have never at all aged well one bit.
- There are a few bad shorts (such as "Cindy and Starbox", "Now Loading", and "Starbox and Cindy 2") and jokes here and there. But in terms of shorts, there aren't really that many bad shorts since the shorts that are actual duds of the reboot are clearly the ones that are either plain bad shorts or ones that are mediocre or below average at best.
- Digital eMation produces much more stiffer animation for the show (in Season 2 at least), which is pretty sad since they animate a lot of higher quality shows like OK KO: Let's Be Heroes, Young Justice, the Ben 10 series, and, to a lesser extent, Family Guy. While the animation isn't as great as the original show's animation, to begin with, it still sucks how it downgraded a little bit after one season.
- As if the problem wasn't quite enough the episode "23 and WB" was an odd way to end the 2nd season thus creating an unresolved cliffhanger whether it'll be renewed for season 3 or not. Luckily, it was renewed for a third season, so this may be a moot point when it comes out.
- The introduction of gross-out humor is a turnoff to some.
Reception
Like the original series, this reboot received mostly positive reviews from older fans and newcomers to Animaniacs and became one of the three most-watched Warner Bros. animated streaming programs, the others being Looney Tunes Cartoons and Jellystone!.

- The reboot's director Katie Rice previously worked in shows like Harvey Girls Forever! and the infamous Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon". Wellesley Wild previously used to work for Family Guy and Gabe Swarr worked to Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness.
- The show's first episode has attracted controversy for a background joke . During the "Reboot It" song sequence, two posters are shown referencing the nursery rhyme and Internet meme "Johny Johny Yes Papa", Johnny 2: Telling Lies and Johnny: The Beginning, the former of which features Johnny Depp an the title role. The series had aired a few weeks after Depp lost in his lawsuit against The Sun related to publications of allegations of abusive treatment of his ex-wife Amber Heard, which led to Warner Bros. asking Depp to resign from the Fantastic Beasts franchise and replacing him with Mads Mikkelsen.
- Tom Ruegger had stated in an interview with Rolling Stone that if he worked on the revival, Hello Nurse would have became the CEO, surpassing Thaddeus Plotz, instead of Nora Rita Norita.
