Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back is a platform video game developed by Black Forest Games. The game was released for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4 on October 31, 2017. The game is the fifth entry in the Bubsy series, and the first new entry in 21 years since Bubsy 3D.
Bad Qualities
- The levels themselves are very boring since they're very basic woodland, desert, and space levels with nothing unique about them. In fact, most in their respective region look the same.
- The game is very easy since it takes reaching the levels no problem because of the verticality of most levels and the fact that you can glide past most things.
- The yarn collectibles are just there for the sake of getting a high score. They could've been like Mario and give you an extra life after collecting 100 or like Sonic and let you take an extra hit but they aren't.
- The PC version has a glitch which when starting a level an imprint of what is on screen will add an invisible layer that can go over some objects like collectibles making them invisible depending on where you are.
- Bubsy almost never shuts up during levels, fortunately, this is option to turn off his voice entirely.
- The bosses are very simple since they have predictable patterns and are the same boss as they're just Woolies in a UFO.
- There are only 13 levels that are really short. In fact, you can beat the game in less than two hours; what's worse is that if you have the level codes on hand you skip straight to the bosses making the game even shorter.
- There are also no unlockables or any secrets to be found since the 5 keys littered throughout every level just gives you more yarn and the three challenges each level has (finding all set number of lives, not dying once, and unlocking the wooly vault) gets you nothing.
- The game has level codes, which is not only an outdated format, but they're unnecessary since the game saves automatically and you can replay levels whenever.
- There's a pounce ability which can actually get you killed since Bubsy will leap forward in an arc and if there is something above him he will stop immediately.
- This game plays similar to Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, a game made by the same developers, with similar gameplay (minus gliding).
- The graphics themselves while good are pretty mediocre and looks like an early PS3 game.
- This is bare-boned for its $30 price, even Parappa Remastered for the same platform or even Popeye for the Switch are cheaper, fortunately, the game gets occasional price drop.
Good Qualities
- The player can find a power-up, which lets Bubsy survive a single hit (Black shirt) similar to the bubble from the Sonic games.
- Doug Erholtz does a decent job voice acting Bubsy making his voice a bit more tolerable than previous entries.
- Decent controls that are an improvement over previous entries as Bubsy responds immediately to which direction you tell you to go. Bubsy also doesn't feel slippery like before.
- The game does take the time to poke at itself since Bubsy will make comments like "Is water still my kryptonite?", "How am I gliding? Hehe. I have no idea.", "Remember when falling used to kill me?".
- There are some okay jokes from time to time.
- Instead of atoms or marbles the game uses yarn as the main collectible, which makes a lot more sense for a game about a bobcat.
- Not to mention, Bubsy also looks better (3D model) than in Bubsy 3D
- There's a verbosity meter, which allows you to manipulate how much Bubsy speaks. From silent to "Bubsy".
- This game is quite an improvement over the previous games.
- Bubsy runs at a more manageable speed and the camera is also expanded, giving you more time to detect to danger before you get into an accident.
- The controls are much better, mentioned above.
- fall damage is no more, proven in a boss level, not needing to Glide to survive fall damage.
- Decent soundtrack.
Reception
The game was met with mixed to negative reception, with review aggregator Metacritic giving the PC version a weighted average score of 44 out of a possible 100 and the PS4 version a score of 45 out of 100, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".
