Dwegons and Leprechauns, also known as Dwegons and Lepurcans, is a 2014 computer animated film. It focuses on a race of miniature creatures called Dwegons who help out a family who has inherited an old house and want to turn it into an inn.
Why It Sucks
- The animation is cheap and absolutely laughable at points. The animations of the animals (especially the bear that attacks in the beginning and the Fitzgerald family cat) and Jim Fitzgerald's death are notable examples of this.
- The character designs look ugly and poorly-made, which is especially notable with the animals. Some of the dwegons and the creatures in Dwegonland are similarly bad, looking like creatures that were made in Spore. Some of the character designs, such as Pete Fitzgerald and the bull, are also inconsistent and look like they came from a different movie.
- The characters are very one-dimensional.
- The story is rather clichéd, generic, and predictable. There is also too much exposition that goes on in the movie, which doesn't leave much room for actual storyline.
- While the few song numbers are not absolutely terrible, they are fairly mediocre. The soundtrack isn't much better or worse.
- Some of the movie's scenes and writing do not make sense. For example, after the grandmother removes a potato that the Dwegons stuck into a sink pipe, water comes rushing out, but no water was coming out of the pipe nor did the Dwegons turn the water on before the potato was put there. Additionally, a blue Dwegon was able to hack the servers for an eBay-like website to make it so that nobody else can bid on an auction the Fitzgerald family was eyeing, which is ridiculous and very impossible.
- The quality of the voice acting ranges from bland to forced to outright insufferable, with Mr. Pavorah's voice being the worst of the bunch. His snively, high-pitched voice and constant stuttering is not only incredibly annoying, but it makes it hard to understand what he's saying.
- Poor editing and transitions between shots, one example being when Nosey Threehorn flies in Jim's kitchen before crashing into the batter-filled pan.
- Some scenes have disjointed pacing that is not helped by the sloppy editing, transitions and animations. One egregious example of this is the scene where Pete falls into a hole in the dilapidated house and is pulled out with a rope.
- Jim's heart attack and death is poorly executed, as we don't get to know much about him before he passes, which greatly hampers the emotional impact the scene could have had.
- The jokes are often nonsensical and unfunny and have little to no buildup. For example, after one of the Dwegons looks at the inside of the Fitzgerald family car's hood and cuts a wire to stop a car alarm, he says "Now the doctor can operate in peace!", even though there weren't any problems with the car. Some of the dialogue suffers similar issues, especially with the Dwegons.
- Product placement/asset theft: In one scene during the later half of the movie when Vlady and Tatiana are looking for a place to stay, the Windows XP taskbar can be seen on the laptop.
- Misleading title and poster: Despite the name, leprechauns do not serve a major role in the movie and only appear in a scene explaining the origins of the dwegons.
- The conflict with Darvagan and the main cast is introduced far too late in the movie, and the fight with Darvagan and his minions with the Dwegons is boring and unsatisfying.
The Only Redeeming Quality
- The scenery in Dwegonland is actually somewhat interesting, but is sadly marred by the poor CGI and animation.
