While the 8 Seasons were well received, the same can't be said for these seasons. As many people believed it went downhill when Cristina Yang left.

Why It's A Failed Surgery Now

Season 9-Present

  1. In Season 9 through Season 11 (past seasons and today), they killed off multiple beloved characters. Some deaths were good, but some deaths made people upset. This includes:
    • In Season 9, Lexie Gray and Mark Sloan passed away as a result of the plane crash. Many people believe this show jumped the shark because of this and started its decline.
    • Sandra Oh, the actress to Cristina Yang, left Grey's Anatomy in Season 10, mainly due to her pursuit of less stressful projects.
    • Derek Shepherd passed away in a car accident in Season 11. This devastated fans so much, that it ended up in Collider's 'Grey's Anatomy': The Most Devastating Character Deaths, Ranked'.[1]
  2. Quantity Over Quality: Many shows suffered from quality over quantity, just look at Family Guy, and Grey's Anatomy is a big example of this. The show now has 19 seasons (it was renewed for a 20th season not too long ago) and 411.
    • Not to mention it also suffered from "Seasonal Rot," where a show was good at first but is now unwatchable.
  3. Similar to La Rosa de Guadalupe, they made an entire season about COVID-19; While it sounds like a good idea on paper because of the recent controversy over COVID-19 and it being a medical show, the execution isn't that great, because of how redundant and repetitive it got.
  4. The show nowadays doesn't feel like a medical show anymore, but a soap opera, ex-fans of the show say.
  5. Many times, the storylines get recycled throughout multiple episodes, proving how the showrunners ran out of ideas.
  6. Overall, it feels very recycled and repetitive. This includes:
    • Marriages are becoming failed ones.
    • All season finales involve a crash of some kind.
    • Pregnancies are becoming high-risk ones.
    • Most of the characters had to get on the operating table and have never experienced a problem in the series.

Overall

  1. Sometimes, the show gets things about a surgeon wrong, such as the diagnosis, the chief running the hospital, and more. However, we're not saying the past few seasons didn't have a problem with this either, as they're just as ridiculous as the newer ones.
  2. Many useless characters have been hated throughout the years, an example of this includes:
    • Erica Hahn: She was a very hateful and useless character in the Grey's Anatomy franchise. She was also used as a plot device.
    • Izzie Stevens: Many people believe her to be the most boring character of Grey's Anatomy and the worst surgeon overall.
    • Robert Stark: He replaced Arizona Robbins when she went to Africa, He also stole all sorts of ideas and never gave credit. He even ignored a patient's concerns because he was fixated on something else.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. This show, like many other TV series that had a decline in quality over time, had a very promising beginning in contrast to its newer seasons. As the show progressed, it seemed to lose its charm because of how the show kept jumping the shark and killing off beloved characters.
  2. Despite its downfall from grace, some good characters didn't leave the show, such as Meredith Grey and Richard Webber.
  3. Despite Lexie Gray and Mark Sloan being killed off, season 9 is arguably the most tolerable out of all.

Trivia

  • Grey's Anatomy's huge success resulted in several spin-offs, including Station 19, Grey's Anatomy: B-Team, and Private Practice.
    • Despite receiving a 6.9 rating on IMDb, audiences have panned Station 19, saying it "got worse with each episode."
    • Private Practice received mixed reviews from fans of the Grey's Anatomy franchise. Regardless if it got a 6.8 on IMDb, it didn't receive as much hate as Station 19,
    • Grey's Anatomy: The Webisodes, also known as Grey's Anatomy: B-Team isn't as well-known as the other spin-offs, with only 500+ people rating it. As a result, it received a 7.3 IMDb rating, making it the highest-rated spin-off of all the Grey's Anatomy spin-offs.
  • Because of how popular the show was, it received an overseas spin-off called A corazón abierto, which was well-received, to the point where the premiere was watched by nearly half of Colombia's television audience.

Reception

Season 1-8

When the show premiered, the feedback from the general public and media was quite positive, with praise being given to it as a good start. Death and All His Friends from Season 6, Episode 24, was the highest-rated episode on IMDb.

Season 9-Present

However, the praise wouldn't last for long. In the eighth season finale of Season 8, Mark Sloan and Lexie Gray passed away in a plane crash. It left many fans at the time devastated by the finale. It got even worse when Sandra Oh, the actress of Cristina Yang, left the show. Fans of the show told people to stop watching the show after she left. How to Save a Life is the lowest-rated episode on IMDb due to Derek's death.

Overall

The series is still praised from time to time, receiving 7.6% on IMDb from critics and audiences, a 75% from Rotten Tomatoes, and 94% on Google.
