Sure, it could be more fancier if the show’s staff didn’t choose this segment as the official kickoff to what ultimately ended up as a really sour five-year run of episodes.

"House Fancy" is the first segment of the first episode in the sixth season of SpongeBob SquarePants and is overall the 195th (196th if counting the lost episode, "The Sponge Who Could Fly") episode of the series, as well as the first episode of the dark age of the show in production order.

Plot

SpongeBob helps Squidward to fix his home to win a television competition on the most beautiful houses of Bikini Bottom against Squilliam.

Un-fancy Qualities

  1. First and foremost, The infamous and gruesome scene of the tear of the Squidward nail is far too disturbing and out of place for a SpongeBob episode and would be adapted better only for cartoons for adults such as Family Guy or South Park. This is an excellent example of which seasons 6, 7, and even 8, are hated due to the lack of the qualities of a good cartoon made for children.
    1. Granted, SpongeBob SquarePants does have those kind of moments previously, but those never took it this extreme.
  2. SpongeBob and Patrick are out of character in this episode.
    • While he is still likable in this episode, SpongeBob is portrayed as an annoying child and combined while ruining his house with Squidward and tormenting him. Even if it is honest, he is not as serious as he will be in subsequent episodes.
    • Patrick, while tolerable, is a perfect example given that in his only cameo in the episode, he goes directly to the Squidward's bathroom without permission and "has a dumped" in the toilet, which kills his toilet. Even in "The Snowball Effect" he had managed to ask for permission from Squidward.
  3. The plot can be interesting, but how to ruin structure. It starts with Squidward, who sees House Fancy on TV and sees Squilliam and his house, so he jealous and starts arranging him, then SpongeBob offers to help, and Squidward accepts. 7 minutes of the episode filled with gags of the two who restructure the house and end up boring you.
    • By the way, the rhythm is a complete mess, with aforementioned before the renovation that lasts too long, as well as the presentation of the Squilliam's house.
  4. The animation, while still good, seems slightly downgraded from the first five seasons as it looks more extinguished and less colorful, including giving a strange feeling of laziness, which wasn’t present in the previous seasons.
    • There are also more animation errors here than the previous seasons, such as when Squidward had rested the cup to speak with the director of the show, and after he discovered Squilliam, his cup materialized in his hands and broke up; Or when Squilliam and the director had entered the elevator of his house, where you can see that the squid paint on the right does not have the monociglio.
    • The opening of the House Fancy show, while it looks good, aged rather poorly with its blocky CGI.
  5. Nicky, the one-time character of this episode, is an incredibly weird and designed character (namely his face looking WAY too humanoid-like), since Nicky looks more like a character out of Disney's Recess than a SpongeBob SquarePants character.
  6. Overall, this is a poor way to start season 6, an already bad season, in production order.

Fancy Qualities

  1. Squidward and Squilliam are still likable characters.
    • SpongeBob (despite being a bit out-of-character) is also a likable character, unlike what he would become later in Seasons 6b & 7.
    • Although what he did was gross and pointless here, Patrick does manage to be tolerable, unlike what he would later become this season.
  2. Decent Ending: Although Squidward's house did get destroyed, he still managed to beat Squilliam over who has the fanciest house.
  3. Some funny moments, such as:
    1. The part where the director is about to say that Squilliam has the fanciest house, only for Squilliam's phone to ring, with the second time that happens, Squilliam looks at the camera as he says with an annoyed expression "I have the fancies ring??".
    2. While the scene where Patrick craps in Squidward's toilet is gross and out of nowhere, the scene where the toilet is begging for mercy can be funny, depending on your point of view.
      • "Please....please! Somebody put me out of my misery! Have mercy on my soul!"
  4. The House Fancy opening is epic, due to the soundtrack and animation.

Reception

"House Fancy" received mixed reviews from critics and fans, with praise going into the plot but criticized for the infamous toenail scene. Alongside its sister episode, it received a 6.7/10 on IMDB. PIEGUYRULZ rated the episode as "MEH" in his season 6 video.
