Red Dead Redemption is a western-themed action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar San Diego and published by Rockstar Games. While the Main game was a huge success, sadly the same cannot be said about the PS4 and Nintendo Switch ports which was critically panned by many users due to a lack of improvements and the removal of the multiplayer.

Why These Ports Have No Faith

  1. Right out of the gate, just like the infamous Far Cry 3: Classic Edition, these versions are nothing but just ports, while it was rumored that it will be a remaster, this never happened. Sound familiar?
  2. The game still runs on 30FPS instead of 60FPS which is completely unacceptable by today's standards as most of the PS4 games nowadays run at 60FPS, but not this game.
    • Although it did finally get a 60FPS patch on October 3, 2023, it's only available for PS5 which means if you own the Switch and PS4 version, you are stuck with 30FPS.
  3. For some odd reason, Rockstar decided to release it only on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch out of all the ports instead of Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and even Xbox One (although that one can be excused since the Xbox has the backward compatibility function). This is sad for most PC users as they have to rely on emulation to get this game running which is already made a chore since emulating this game is hard.
    • A PC Port is what most people were waiting for since it could use specific PC beneficial stuff such as mouse and keyboard controls and mod supports.
  4. For unexplained reasons, these ports removed the multiplayer function.
  5. There are little to no graphical enhancements outside of the resolution increased, even the textures remained the same. Does this sound familiar?
  6. Some of the bugs & and glitches remained unfixed for the most part.
  7. The Switch version somehow looks worse as it has worse shadow quality, worse anti-aliasing, a minor drop in foliage draw, and low-grade texture filtering.
  8. Some new animation errors that weren't seen in other ports can be spotted.
  9. As if all of these pointers weren't enough, these ports cost about $50 which is very unacceptable for a simple port that removed the multiplayer function and has little to no improvements.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The resolution has been increased up to 1080p.
  2. The performance on the Switch is quite impressive, it's also nice to see the game being playable on a portable platform.
  3. Both ports include both the base game and Undead Nightmare.
  4. Since October 3, 2023, they released a 1.03 patch which finally adds 60FPS, but sadly it's only for PS5.

Reception

While the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions of Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare received "generally favorable reviews" according to critics on Metacritic (probably because of bribery), they received "generally unfavorable reviews" by most users on Metacritic due to the removal of the multiplayer, lack of graphical enhancements, gameplay enhancements, new animation errors and the lack of frame rate upgrades. Nintendo Life's PJ O'Reilly called the release "bare-bones".
