Returning Japanese is a two-parter episode of King of the Hill.

Why It Rocks

  1. Cotton has gotten character development by introducing his previous love, Michiko, whom he met during the war.
  2. Junichiro is a great foil towards Hank.
  3. The first part ends with a good cliffhanger towards the second, with Hank first seeing Junichiro.
  4. The episode is an example of using a small cast of characters done right.
  5. "Dansu?"
  6. The bond between both Hank and Junichiro is probably the best part of the episode since we get to see their similarities and them starting to notice each as brothers, and Junichiro starts to warm up towards his biological father, Cotton, and starts to see him as his dad, shows how much the Hill family love each other and is proof that Junichiro is more than a Japanese Hank and is his own character, thus making the episode very relatable to those who are half-siblings.
  7. It contains a lot of continuity from previous episodes, such as the reveal of Junichiro having a narrow urethra just like Hank does, something that has been established during earlier seasons, and explains that Hank had gotten his narrow urethra from his father, and not his mother.

Bad Qualities

  1. Most of the revelations in the episode are hardly used in episodes afterward due to FOX's insistence on minimal continuity for easier syndication play, with the exception of Junichiro, who made a cameo in the episode "Lucky's Wedding Suit".
  2. Dale and Bill's subplot, along with Luanne's subplot, are filler and contribute hardly anything to the main plot.
  3. We never see the Hills return back to America, as the episode ends with Bobby reuniting with his Japanese dance partner.
