Plot

Lisa finds her idol, Bleeding Gums Murphy, in the hospital, while Bart has surgery after eating a jagged metal toy in his cereal.

Why It Rocks

  1. The episode is very emotional and is generally one of the saddest moments in the series, but it's done in a way where it makes you feel for the characters and it doesn't rely on using emotional manipulation.
  2. The episode shows a caring side to some of the characters, like how Bart uses money he got in a lawsuit to buy Bleeding Gums Murphy's album for Lisa, and Homer trying to comfort Lisa.
  3. The ending of the episode when Lisa sees Bleeding Gums Murphy in the clouds and they sing together is very heartwarming, and the "Jazzman" song that plays during it is amazing.
  4. Lisa is very likeable in this episode, as it does a great job at trying to make you feel for her, the episode is also a great character development episode for her as well.
  5. The subplot with Bart is also very interesting.
  6. The episode, despite being relatively serious throughout, does have a few funny moments, like Bart imagining himself as a butterfly.

The Only Bad Quality

  1. Plot hole: It was never explained how Bleeding Gums Murphy died.

Reception

It holds a rating of 8.2/10 on IMDb.
