Saturday Night Live (or SNL for short) is an American late-night live television sketch comedy and variety show created by Lorne Michaels and developed by Dick Ebersol. Premiering on NBC on October 11, 1975 (under the name NBC's Saturday Night), the show has been extremely successful, having aired 45+ seasons and becoming a staple of prime time television.
Why These Seasons Rock
- Hilarious sketches, parody commercials, and characters, including Weekend Updates, Wayne's World, What Up with That, Buckwheat, Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood (a parody of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood), Coneheads, Celebrity Jeopardy, Mr. Bill, amongst several others. A few of them even got adapted into movies, such as The Blues Brothers.
- Competent hosts such as Alec Baldwin.
- Witty dialogue from most of the sketches.
- Great musical performances.
- Funny and almost accurate impressions of celebrities and politicians, most famously Tina Fey's impersonation of Sarah Palin.
- Several cast members have gone on to have further successful careers.
- This includes Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Brian Doyle-Murray, Chevy Chase, Eddie Murphy, Ana Gasteyer, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Chris Rock, Chris Kattan, Mike Myers, Phil Hartman, Jon Lovitz, Amy Pohler, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Jimmy Fallon, Kristen Wiig, Robert Smigel, Andy Samberg, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, Kenan Thompson, Pete Davidson, and many more.
- There is some of the great announcers, especially the legendary Don Pardo and Darrell Hammond.
- Mel Brandt and Bill Hanrahan, despite their announcing jobs from the 7th season sounds normal and had different opening lines, also brings good luck at being the announcers.
Bad Qualities
- While the series decline is always disputed, Seasons 6, 11, and 20 weren't that good, especially season 6.
- Some of the non-sketch segments can be questionable:
- Some musical performances are infamous, such as Ashlee Simpson being caught lip-syncing or singer Sinéad O' Connor ripping up a picture of Pope John Paul II, the former of which is often considered one of the worst live performance fails in music, Rage Against the Machine had the America flag upside down, the Replacements was caused to have drug overdose during rehearsal and FEAR causes chaos and riots that made fans says that "New York sucks!" and destructs the set with the fans which caused $200,000 worth a damage to the studio, during the incident, other members such as John Belushi, Ian MacKaye from Minor Threat, Tesco Vee from The Meatmen, the members of The Cro-Mags, and John Brannon from Negative Approach also joined in.
- Some of the hosts can be so bad they ruin the whole show, such as Steven Seagal, whose stint was so bad that it got him banned from the show for life.
- Some sketches can be too tasteless, corny, and unfunny for some and they often don't age very well.
- They once plagiarized a sketch from the Canadian sketch comedy series "This Hour Has 22 Minutes"
