Sonny with a Chance is an American sitcom created by Steve Marmel which aired for two seasons on Disney Channel from February 8, 2009, to January 2, 2011.
Plot
The series follows the experiences of teenager Sonny Munroe, portrayed by Demi Lovato, who becomes the newest accepted cast member of her favorite sketch comedy television show, So Random!
Why It's "So Far, So Great"
- Plenty of hilarious So Random sketches like:
- Bumbling Bee
- Fasty’s Really Fast Food
- The Check It Out Girls
- So, You Think You Can PP Dance?
- Annoying Girl
- Dolphin Boy
- Gassie: The Toot’n Pooch
- The Wicked Witch Of The Web
- Garry and Larry
- The Real Princesses Of New Jersey
- Sicky Vicky
- Amazing set design and lighting. It looks like it’s being filmed in a movie studio.
- Incredible premise.
- Great acting, especially from Demi Lovato, Tiffany Thornton, and Sterling Knight.
- Well-likable characters like Sonny Munroe, Tawni Hart, Zora Lancaster, Nico Harris, Chad Dylan Cooper, and Grady Mitchell.
- Amazing and creative CGI backgrounds in the opening.
- Hanging in at the Hollywood movie studios was a brilliant idea.
- It is the first time we see a Disney sitcom in the widescreen format filmed and aired in High-Definition so that the viewer can watch it on 16:9 HDTVs, which makes it refreshing to see it in a new aspect ratio format.
- The second season premiere is the most-watched episode of the series in Disney Channel history gardened 6.1 million viewers.
- The intro "So Far So Great" is catchy.
- Each episode also has some guest stars from other popular Disney shows:
- Eden Sher, voice actress of Star Butterfly on Star vs. the Forces of Evil guest-starred in "Three's Not Company".
- Kelly Blatz, star of Aaron Stone guest-starred in "With A Chance Of Dating".
- Selena Gomez, star of Wizards of Waverly Place made a guest appearance in the episode "Battle of the Network’s Stars".
- Raven-Symoné, star of That's So Raven made a guest appearance in the episode "That's So Sonny" and the episode referred to it.
- It has some heartwarming moments.
- In the final episode, Sonny sings "What To Do", which is a great song for a series finale.
- With that said, the series finale, "New Girl", was an awesome way to end the show, and would have been the perfect ending for the franchise if it did not continue past that point.
Bad Qualities
- The show ended way too early at the start of 2011, which was disappointing.
- It was originally planned to get a third season but was canceled due to Demi Lovato having an eating disorder and a drug addiction.
- It had a horrible spin-off that betrayed its source media.
- While the acting is good, it can be overly exaggerated.
- Some disgusting moments, such as a baby doll peeing in Grady’s face in "Prank'd. It makes you wonder how this even got past, especially on Disney Channel.
- Zora Lancaster, a main character from the show hardly appears with only having 26 episodes out of 47 because she had the most absences in the show with a total of 8 episodes in season 1 and 13 episodes in season 2.
- It has some blatant product placement like McDonald's, Dr. Pepper, Tropicana, LG, and Apple, which can feel out of place for a Disney Channel sitcom.
- The season 1 finale "Sonny: So Far", while it's still good was mostly a clip show episode using the footage from all 20 episodes, even though Sonny and Tawni were sharing moments in a talk show.
- Unlikable characters such as Dakota and Mr. Condor.
- Sonny can be very dimwitted at times, especially when she disregards Tawni's behavior because she wants to be friends.
- Bad episodes such as "Gummy with a Chance" and "Gassie Passes".
Reception
Currently, the most-watched episode of the series is "Walk a Mile in My Pants" with 6.3 million viewers. The episode "Gassie Passes" is the least-watched episode, scoring 2.9 million viewers. The show got 2 wins and 6 nominations.
The rating it scored on IMDb is 6.1/10 and on TV.com is 7.4/10
