The Ren & Stimpy Show: Veediots! is a video game based on the Ren & Stimpy cartoon series on Nickelodeon. It was released by THQ for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993.
The game was re-released for the Game Boy, which will be the main focus of this page and is considered one of the worst Game Boy ports ever.
Why It's an EEDIOT!!
- Horrible controls that are very clunky and unresponsive, while the SNES version had slippery controls, at least they were still decent due to being tight and responsive, also they are somehow worse than in Space Cadet Adventure, despite being slightly faster, but it is still sluggish anyways.
- Some sections of levels are cut, the best example would be the first level where it cuts the part where you are in Stimpy's mouth, which is incredibly disappointing.
- When you lose all of your lives, instead of having a game over, you directly go to the title screen, which is lazy and just shows how much low effort Gray Matter has put into this version.
- Atrocious graphics that are much worse than Space Cadet Adventure, as here the graphics are pixelated, it had poor details on sprites, and some of the sprites also are way too big, this is easy to see with Ren's sprite.
- The animations are also horrible, since they are very sluggish, due to the awful framerate (see below), and they aren't even fluid at all, not to mention that they can look glitchy sometimes.
- In fact, the framerate is so terrible that it makes the animation sprite bug when jumping, since your character will slightly move, how bad can it get?
- The animations are also horrible, since they are very sluggish, due to the awful framerate (see below), and they aren't even fluid at all, not to mention that they can look glitchy sometimes.
- Horrible framerate, the game framerate is on par with the Game Boy port of Toy Story, since it barely even manages to surpass 20 fps, to the point of sometimes running at 10 fps!
- It is easy to see in the first level where you go to a clock to make you jump longer, where it sometime might run at 5 fps, even when jumping you can see it, though in a lesser extent.
- For some reason, they cut two levels from the SNES version, which makes the port even worse.
- There are no cutscenes before a level like in the SNES version, though this might be excusable since the Game Boy is less powerful.
- Horrible soundtrack, except for the Stimpy's Invention level music. The reason why the soundtrack is so bad is that it is very ear-bleeding and repetitive, and while the SNES version had a poor soundtrack too, at least it was listenable, compared to this. One of the best examples would be the first-level theme (which is the Log commercial theme song) that isn't badly composed but has horrible instruments.
- The Stimpy's Invention level is the worst due to how repetitive it is and also for the fact that it is way too long, taking 10 minutes to finish, which is half of the game!
- There's voice acting, while it isn't a bad thing for a Game Boy game, doesn't fit well, and due to this, the voice clips sound incredibly awful.
- Due to how bad everything is in this port, it feels more like a Game.com game than a Game Boy game, due to the horrible framerate, the poor graphics, and the awful sound effects and voice clips.
- Awful sound effects that sound extremely ear-bleeding.
- The port is incredibly short, as due to how much content was cut, the game can be finished in only 15 minutes, the only thing that makes it last more than 10 minutes is the Stimpy's Invention level. Sure, the SNES version was also incredibly short but at least it has far more content than this port and takes 35 minutes to beat.
- Unlike the SNES version, you cannot even attack in mid-air, only grabbing projectiles, which is annoying and is a rather weird change too, like it doesn't even require some time that had to do with the limitation.
- There aren't any invincibility frames so if you keep getting hit, you will die.
- No ending in this port, it is nothing more than a screen where both Ren and Stimpy praise you for beating the game.
The Only Redeeming Quality
- At least the animators tried to make the graphics look faithful to the other versions, and it does look similar, despite how badly made they are.
Reception
While the SNES version received a mixed reception, this port received a negative reception from critics, it was criticized for the gameplay, unimpressive visuals, ear-bleeding music and sounds, and several features being missing due to Game Boy limitations.
