NOTE: This game was actually pretty decent. This page will focus on why it flopped horribly.

Minecraft Earth was a 2019 free-to-play augmented reality game developed by Mojang Studios and published by Xbox Game Studios. It was released worldwide on December 11th, 2019 for Android and iOS. The game is a second spin-off of the popular video game franchise Minecraft. The game was basically designed like Pokémon Go but instead of cathing Pokémons, you actually create your own world. The game was built on the Bedrock engine The game was shut down in June 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with no signs of coming back.

Why It Flopped

  1. Bad release timing: Even though the game was designed to be like Pokémon Go (where you go outside to play it), it was released a few months before the COVID-19 pandemic started, which as a result defeated the purpose of the game.
    1. Even though Pokémon Go would have also suffered from the same issue, they actually made a Remote Raid Pass as a result of the pandemic, which made the game still popular, while Minecraft Earth didn't bring anything to fix the issue.
    2. Aside from the pandemic, the game was also released when games like Pokémon Go stopped being popular, which as a result didn't get a lot of interest from people.
  2. Unlike Pokémon Go, which was a simple enough game to make people enjoy, Minecraft was a very complex game to translate it to an augmented reality game.
  3. The game launch was a disaster
  4. The game quickly became repetitive over time.
  5. The game was a notable example of poor optimization in AR games: The game required a very powerful phone to run it and the game wasn't really optimized for phones that aren't powerful enough, which as a result caused various issues, such as constant lag, crashes, slowdowns and much more.
  6. The game was prone to frequent crashes on older devices, which as a result made the game almost unplayable.
