RWBY is a 2013 web series created by Monty Oum for Rooster Teeth. It was released on July 18th, 2013 on Rooster Teeth's official website. Since its inception, the show has spawned a massive franchise, ranging from mangas, video games to merchandise, and became one of the most popular US shows in Japan. The show was positively received and is considered one of Rooster Teeth's flagship shows along with Red vs. Blue despite its decline in quality.
Why These Volumes Rock
The fighting scenes and choreography are stunning and some of the major highlights of the show.
Most of the characters are likable and their characterizations improved since Volume 2.
Good character development.
Decent writing, especially after Volume 1, with tons of great moments, like world-building.
The character designs are very good and memorable.
Bad Qualities
The animation in the first 3 volumes is very subpar and didn't age very well, and looks like an amateur MMD video. This is probably due to the low budget the series had.
Volume 1, while decent, is weaker than the later volumes, due to subpar animation, the characters being one-note and flat, and some of the dialogue falling into the "so bad it's good" category. Thankfully, most of the issues were fixed in the second volume.
After Volume 2, the show would decline in quality
Volume 3, while decent, is pretty divisive among Japanese fans, due to the show shifting its tone to a much darker one.
Speaking of decline in quality, the show would massively go downhill between Volumes 4 and 6, but thankfully it was recovered with Volume 7, only to go downhill again with Volume 8. The show would also redeem itself with Volume 9.
Since Volume 4, they decided to change designs for the characters. While most of the redesigns are decent and cool (like Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee and Penny Polendina), others are inferior compared to the original designs.
