RWBY is a 2013 web series created by Monty Oum for Rooster Teeth. It was released on July 18th, 2013 on Rooster Teeth's official website. While the first 2 volumes are generally well-received and Volumes 3, 7 and 9 receiving mixed-to-positve reviews, Volumes 4-6 and 8 garnered mixed-to-extremely negative reviews and caused the series to undergo a decline in quality. The fifth volume is known for when the show has hitten rock bottom.

Why These Volumes Suck

  1. The main problem with these volumes is that they lack the charm of the first 2 volumes and to some extent, Volume 3. This is due to the creator, Monty Oum, dying back in 2015, when the third volume was in production. Despite his passing, Rooster Teeth decided to continue producing the show, and while there's nothing wrong with a company continuing a series created by a deceased person, the way they treat the show is absolutely abysmal, as they decided to milk it all of its worth. This led to the show suffering from a decline in quality.
    1. Not helping the matters is that the fifth volume sped up the decline and is often considered the absolute lowest point of the show.
  2. The writing in the first 3 volumes, while not one of the sharpest and in fact, it's generally considered flawed, still got the job done, as the characters were still well-written, decent plots and so on. But the writing in these volumes is terrible, as it mostly consists of either plot exposition comparable to Destiny 1 or filler, with Volume 6 being a notable example.
    • Volume 5 is a prime example of bad writing, as it rarely has any fighting scenes (one of the major highlights of the show), and is overreliant on exposition.
  3. The fighting scenes, especially in Volume 5, are a lot clunkier than the first Volumes.
  4. The tone was drastically changed to a much darker tone in Volume 3, which split the Japanese fanbase, but this issue was cranked up to eleven in these volumes.
  5. When the show finally seemed to improve itself with Volume 7, it suffered from another massive downfall with Volume 8.
  6. The Final Word, the Volume 8 finale, is often considered one of the worst finales of the entire show, as well one of the worst finales ever, almost comparable to Game of Thrones' finale.
  7. Overall, these Volumes completely destroyed RWBY's repuation on the Internet and a lot of people hate it. Not helping the matters is that this also contributed to Rooster Teeth's downfall, which already suffered from it due to harassment allegations, awful workplace.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Volume 6 is currently the least bad.
  2. The animation is a massive improvement over the first 3 volumes despite being rushed in a few scenes.
  3. The artstyle is still good.
  4. Some of the characters still get good character development, for example Jaune became much more likable and heroic.
  5. We finally got to see Neopolitan again in volume 6.

Reception

While the first two volumes were positively received and Volumes 3, 7 and 9 receiving mixed-to-positive reviews, Volume 4-6 and 8 received mixed-to-extremely negative reviews from critics, audiences and fans, with Volume 5 being considered the absolute lowest point of the entire show, although Volume 6 and 8 are polarizing among fans.
