2 Broke Girls is an American comedy sitcom that aired on CBS, and ran from September 19, 2011 to April 17, 2017 having a span of 6 seasons.
Plot
Street-wise Max (Kat Dennings) doesn't expect much from the new waitress at her night job, a rich girl who has reluctantly joined the food service industry after a string of bad luck. But to her surprise, Caroline (Beth Behrs) is a woman of substance, and just may be her ticket to success. The two strike up an unlikely friendship, after Caroline discovers that Max can bake a mean cupcake, and the women decide if they can just wrangle up the start-up cash, they may have found their big break. Their co-workers at the diner are boss Han Lee, cook Oleg, and cashier Earl.
Bad Qualities
- The main problem with the show is that the premise, while somewhat interesting, just feels bland, boring and just plain stupid.
- Most of the episodes are either stupid, bland, annoying, idiotic, nonsensical, or have horrendous plots that are nothing but pure filler.
- In a way, the chemistry of the two main protagonists, Max and Caroline, feels like a rehash of Charlie and Alan from Two and a Half Men, and Jade and Tori from Victorious, as they both have a very bittersweet chemistry, like the characters as mentioned, while one is extremely mean and obnoxious, while the other one is supposed to be the nice and caring good person, who actually cares about people., but that is far from an improvement, as they both are much worse versions of said characters.
- The characters are extremely annoying, and overall forgettable.
- Max Black is an annoying mean girl stereotype, and feels like a grown-up version of Jade West from Victorious, and a female version of Charlie Harper from Two and a Half Men, since her and Charlie both like sex, and talks about it entirely too much but they some how made Max even more annoying and unbearable.
- Caroline Channing is basically a grown up version of Tori Vega from Victorious, as they both seem like the good protagonists, but they both surprisingly come off as the least interesting character, and also, Caroline is even more bratty than Tori, and she is also a rip-off of Alan from Two and a Half Men, as she is a punching bag, and is also the character, who the owner wants out of their house badly.
- Sophie Kaczynski was arguably a very unnecessary add-on to the show, and she does nothing, but bully Caroline, and make fun of her appearances.
- Oleg is arguably the most annoying and boring character, the show would've been way better without him. All he does is sexually harass everyone he sees, which he should've gotten arrested for.
- Han is a stereotypical character, who tries to hard to be hip and relevant, but comes off has a huge try-hard, and he is also a wimpy Asian stereotype.
- Earl is the old and wise black guy stereotype.
- The writing is extremely awful with garbage attempts at humor or how people in New York are supposed to act.
- The jokes are also extremely lazy, and just became very predictable, as all of them are jokes about having sex, people's genitals, boobs, a building, or house being dirty, being poor, someone's sexual appearance, racist/racial stereotypes and bad parents.
- Not to mention that there was also a joke about a rapist and a joke about someone committing suicide.
- Graphically unfunny, weak, uncomfortable, mean-spirited, awful, trashy, and forced humor that makes the entire show frustrating to watch.
- This show started the downfall of all CBS sitcoms, as after this show, a lot of other sitcoms took inspiration, and made several other horrible unfunny trashy sitcoms.
- The laugh track is painfully annoying, as it plays after the unfunniest lines, and the amount of applause, after every time Jennifer Coolidge appears, is irritating, and pretty unnecessary to have in every single episode, as she is only a regular cast of the show. Sure, she is a celebrity and a funny comedian, but come on, no need for the audience to applause every time she appears.
- Max and Caroline are portrayed to be best friends, but they fight too much.
- The acting sometimes is very cheesy and below average.
- Beth Behrs' acting, while not terrible, makes it obvious that she was uncomfortable saying some of the lines, and even doing some of the things that were on the script.
- In one episode they added a badly edited version of Nicki Minaj's Starships, which was a complete waste of the song, and unnecessary to even add, because the songs had nothing to do with the scene, as they were just trying on clothes, like out of all Nicki Minaj songs, they could've used in the scene, they chose the one that doesn't even match the scene.
- The comedy is obviously cheap with bad jokes and gross toilet humor.
- Ever since season 2, the show, from time-to-time, will focus on love, and relationships, other than the original purpose: comedy.
- The show has a lot of morals that such as;
- Bullying
- Lying
- Violence
- Committing crimes (robbing, breaking in, etc.)
- Manipulation
- Starting drama
- Not doing your job, and disrespecting your boss
- Which is hypocritical, because Caroline did one time, and instantly got fired, while Max did it countless times, and received no punishments at all, which shows that Max is basically the pretty perfect girl of the show, that suffers no consequences for her selfish behavior.
- Impersonation
- Not learning from your mistakes
- The sets are mediocre at best as you can tell that they tried to do something retro but came out not really good.
- The episode titles are extremely generic, and just plain bad as it just has "and the" in the beginning and it's a fail attempt as a title stylization.
- So much cliché after cliché.
- False Advertising: Many of the episode plots don't even match what really happens in the episodes, which a lot of trashy CBS sitcoms after this one was created have.
Good Qualities
- The acting is still okay most of the time.
- The theme song is pretty good.
- A lot of funny and heartwarming moments.
- Ever since season 3, the show's writing has been slightly improving, and the characters did get less annoying, but not my much.
- And speaking of which, the 6th and final season was definitely the show's best season, as there weren't sex jokes left and right, and they made the characters less annoying, but that's not saying much, since that season is also bad.
- Occasional good episodes such as "And Martha Stewart Have a Ball", "And the Big Opening", "And the First Day of School", "And the Girlfriend Experience", "And the First Degree", "And the Fun Factory", "And the Knock-Off Knockout" and "And the Two Openings".
- Caroline, while still annoying, is definitely the show's best character, as she actually cares about working, and trying to survive.
- Decent lighting.
- The episode "And the Escape Room" has Caroline rightfully being angry that Max has been overcharging her rent for years.
- The show jump-started Beth Behr's career.
Reception
2 Broke Girls received mixed to negative reviews. The show was criticized for all the characters unfairly bullying Caroline for no reason. It was also criticized for the "lame" sex jokes and racist jokes as well. The show is considered one of the worst sitcoms on CBS along with seasons 9-12 of Two and a Half Men. The show currently sits at a 6.6/10 on IMDb with other 100,000 ratings.
