The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored the best films of 2020 and early 2021. It took place in Los Angeles at both Union Station and the Dolby Theatre, on April 25, 2021 – two months later than planned – due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cinema. Nominations had been announced on March 15, 2021.

The 93rd Academy Awards is widely considered to be the worst Academy Awards ceremony of all time since the 61st Academy Awards, due to the absence of the Cannes Film Festival and its award Palme d'Or following its controversial cancellation in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the late Chadwick Boseman losing to Anthony Hopkins for Best Actor, the Best Picture nominations (some were released in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), the COVID-19 pandemic, some movies released in early 2021 getting Oscar nominations and flopping hard making the Academy Awards losing 200 million dollars after its grossed 217 million dollars making the 93rd Academy Awards its first and only commercial failure in Academy Awards history and was widely panned by critics and audiences alike.

Overview

Best Director winner Chloé Zhao, who is Chinese, became the first woman of color to have won the category and only the second woman after Kathryn Bigelow (who won in 2010 for The Hurt Locker) to be given the award. Zhao's Oscar win was censored in China and blocked on Chinese social media platforms. Best Actor winner Anthony Hopkins, at age 83, became the oldest winner in the acting category. Best Actress winner Frances McDormand became the seventh person to win a third acting Oscar and the second to win Best Actress three times. As a producer of Nomadland, she also became the first actor in history to win an acting Oscar and a Best Picture Oscar on the same night. Best Supporting Actress winner Youn Yuh-jung became the first Korean actor and only the second Asian woman to win in an acting category. Pete Docter became the first person to win three times for Best Animated Feature. With his nominations in Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Song for One Night in Miami..., Leslie Odom Jr. became the fourth consecutive person to earn acting and songwriting nominations for the same film after Mary J. Blige for Mudbound, Lady Gaga for A Star Is Born, and Cynthia Erivo for Harriet.

Why It's Banished From Wakanda

  1. Fans, critics and viewers were completely upset and incensed that it went without Cannes Film Festival and its award Palme d'Or following its controversial cancellation in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic causing controversy, boycott and hating prior to its release as one of the reasons for its's first and huge commercial failure and flop, in the midst of all criticism and controversy and just before its Best Picture win, the Golden Lion award for Nomadland quickly became the most hated and disliked Golden Lion award to date at the Venice Film Festival, making this year Sundance, Berlin and Venice film festivals considered the worst to date, later ranking Cate Blanchett being the head jury president of Venice Film Festival as the worst head Venice Film Festival jury president of all time and the 74th British Academy Film Awards being the worst BAFTAs of all time.
  2. Its took issues with same of the Best Picture nominations's release dates in which some were released in 2021 instead of Christmas 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and some movies including The White Tiger, The United States vs. Billie Holiday and Judas and the Black Messiah which were released in early 2021 and the idea of the Oscars releasing not only 2020 movies but also early 2021 movies in their Oscar nominations sounded the worst idea in the history of Academy Awards in which it did not help this year Academy Awards.
  3. The cast of the Best Picture nominations including Carey Mulligan, Clancy Brown and Frances McDormand and Mank director David Fincher ended up giving long and endlessly awkward and boring interviews via Zoom prior to the 93rd Academy Awards's broadcast.
  4. Same as what happened with the two previous ceremonies in 2019 and 2020, had no host.
  5. The ceremony wasn't held at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles at all due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  6. Many people think that Anthony Hopkins winning Best Actor instead of Chadwick Boseman was a huge snub.
  7. Joaquin Phoenix looked like he didn't want to be there. He quickly announced the winner and then took off.
  8. The Demon Slayer: Mugen Train snub, enough said.
  9. The Best Picture Oscar wasn't announced last but was rather announced before the Best Actress Oscar, and the Best Picture Oscar should always be announced last.
    • It's speculated that the order was switched so that the show could close with a tribute to Chadwick Boseman if he won Best Actor, but it backfired and led to a major anti-climax when the award was won by Anthony Hopkins, who wasn't at the ceremony and didn't appear remotely to give a winner speech, he only found out that he won the Best Actor category in the morning after the Oscars were over. Hopkins offered to appear via Zoom, but the ceremony's producers denied it. This makes not only disrespectful to Anthony Hopkins but also extremely disrespectful to the late Chadwick Boseman and the ceremony ended on a weird and strange note as a result.
  10. The "In Memoriam" part was really rushed, which is very disrespectful to the people who passed and were shown.
  11. The showing of clips was very inconsistent. For some nomination announcements; they showed clips but didn't for others. This is especially moronic because some people might want to see clips from the movies in case they want to watch them.
  12. A lot of preachiness; such as the infamous "The police will kill three people" speech.
  13. Lots of cringy and embarrassing moments like:
    • Tyler Perry misspelled LBGTQ instead of LGBTQ.
    • Glenn Close's doing Da Butt was so stupid that it became an Internet meme.
    • Frances McDormand's wolf howl is somewhat cringy, but sometimes it's a dedication to a crew who made the film.
  14. After losing the Academy Award yet again, Glenn Close was nicknamed by the commentator as "Glenn Too Close", which was somewhat mean towards the actress, who has been infamously snubbed in many ceremonies despite her astonishing performances.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Some awards were considered well-deserved.
    • Daniel Kaluuya won a well-deserved Best Supporting Actor.
    • Soul won Best Animated Feature.
    • Nomadland won Best Picture.
  2. The scaled-down nature of the ceremony is understandable due to COVID restrictions.
  3. For the first time in Oscar history; an organization won the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. It was given to the Motion Picture and Television Fund for its assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  4. Despite the "In Memoriam" part being too fast, Stevie Wonder's song As was perfectly used.
  5. There were many firsts. for example; Chloe Zhao became the first woman of color to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, Youn Yuh Jung became the first Korean actor to win in an acting category, and Frances McDormand became the first person to win an acting Oscar and a Best Picture Oscar in the same night.
  6. Despite Frances McDormand's cringe wolf howl, it is somehow respectful for their sound mixer Michael Wolf Snyder.
  7. The part where Bong Joon-ho talked about what directing meant to each of the best director nominees was pretty good and really helped gain insight into the directing process.
  8. Despite being worse than the 61st Academy Awards, it was a major set up from the next Academy Awards, which is a lot worse.

Reception

The ceremony was widely panned by critics and audiences alike, receiving a 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus reading: "The 93rd Oscars definitely delivered something different, but after a strong opening moment with Regina King, the changes to this year's ceremony cemented the importance of certain structural traditions -- and how damaging hedging your bets on the Academy's votes can be."

When its was first announced the 93rd Academy Awards was going without Cannes Film Festival following its cancellation during the COVID 19 pandemic, the announcement sparked a big controversy. After Nomadland won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival from Cate Blanchett, it received overwhelming criticism from fans and viewers alike due to the Cannes cancellation. it got tons of dislikes and as of right now, a large fraction of these dislikes came from either being disappointed by the film festivals going on without Cannes or feeling like the idea was not loyal to the Academy Awards.

The 93rd Academy Awards is widely considered to be the worst Academy Awards ceremony of all time since the 61st Academy Awards, due to the absence of the Cannes Film Festival and its award Palme d'Or following its controversial cancellation in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the late Chadwick Boseman losing to Anthony Hopkins for Best Actor, the Best Picture nominations (some were released in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), the COVID-19 pandemic, some movies released in early 2021 getting Oscar nominations and flopping hard making the Academy Awards losing 200 million dollars after its grossed 217 million dollars making the 93rd Academy Awards its first and only commercial failure in Academy Awards history.

Trivia

  • The ceremony was censored in China and Hong Kong, due of the critical comments on China made by Nomadland director Chloe Zhao in 2013 and the nomination of the documentary Do Not Split.
