"You know that scene in BvS where Batman brutally beat all those thugs in the warehouse? I would want him to do the same for the Loud family."

Lomes on Letterboxd

A Loud House Christmas is a live-action TV film by Nickelodeon and a live-action adaptation of the Nickelodeon animated series The Loud House with the characters being played by real actors, rather than the original voice cast. This movie premiered on November 26, 2021, broadcasting on Nickelodeon in the US and streaming on Paramount+ worldwide, with several TV airings across other areas weeks later. It was released 3 months after the release of the show's Netflix animated film, The Loud House Movie.

Premise

When Lincoln Loud realizes his family may be apart for Christmas, he and his best friend, Clyde, go to great lengths to ensure the Louds celebrate the holiday together.

Why It Deserves to Be on the Naughty List Forever

Note: Some of the problems were carried over from Season 4-present of the original show.

  1. The premise seems bland and boring and also feels more like an episode of the show than a TV movie. It’s pretty generic to say the least too.
  2. The acting for the most part is bland especially from Wolfgang Schaeffer, Brian Stepanek, Muretta Moss, etc.
  3. Some of the actors don't properly base the coloring of the cartoon and some of the character designs are inaccurate as well. Below this pointer are a few examples.
    • Lincoln's live-action voice actor, Wolfgang Schaeffer, wears a white wig instead of having his hair dyed to a white or snowball color. It’s pretty much more natural than anything
      • He also sounds a little bit off. Jack Dylan Grazer (who you may remember from Luca, Ron's Gone Wrong and Shazam!) may have been a much better actor to play him since he does at least sound like Lincoln.
      • In the original series, Lana wears a green shirt. In this film however, she wears a blue one. The reason for this is possibly unknown.
    • Luan's shirt in the original series has no sleeves whereas in this film she wears longer sleeves.
    • Lily doesn't wear a purple bow in the original series while she does here. Speaking of which, she went from just wearing a diaper in the first four seasons (even in The Loud House Movie) to wearing a white shirt and light purple pants as of Season 5 and beyond.
    • Lucy's skin was a lot more brighter in the original series than in this film where it’s a more natural beige tone. At least with some makeup she would’ve came close to looking like herself in the original series.
    • Matt Van Smith was seriously miscasted as Bobby’s live-action counterpart because in the original cartoon and its spinoff The Casagrandes he is Mexican-American with tan skin and not fully white and born in Texas. This can already be considered whitewashing.
    • While it is nice for Brian Stepanek to portray his character in the cartoon and knows what's he's doing, he even cannot save this film since his acting isn’t only dull but he doesn't sound entirely like what he does in the original series.
    • Aside from Lynn Sr, Mick Swagger, Clyde McBride (Season 6 onwards), and Katherine Mulligan, the remainder of the actors’ voices do not even sound like the ones in the actual cartoon.
  4. Probably even for a television film the special effects are really unrealistic. Even TV shows such as Henry Danger (A show regarded as having the worst special effects in Nickelodeon history) had way better effects compared to this.
  5. The release date of this movie is somehow really unusual since 2021 already saw the release of the animated Loud House film 3 months before this one was released. Granted that was more of a feature-length affair while this is just a television movie, but it's still strange regardless.
  6. It barely even has anything to do with the original cartoon and feels more like a waste of time and money. At least A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner! had everything that the show had such as the characters.
  7. The soundtrack honestly sounds pretty poor even with Luna's rock music being more ear-piercing. That’s pretty saddening she is one of the most talented characters in the show.
  8. Crappy, low-budget CGI on the snow with the movie's setting, especially with the scene where the Louds snow-shielding with the snow being fake and appearing to be effortless.
  9. Compared to the show, Luan does pretty bad pranks. For example, she made Lincoln blind by just hitting a pie in his face.
  10. Lincoln and Clyde are at their absolute worst in this movie, even more than Kings of the Con from Season 4 of the original cartoon, for sabotaging all of the Louds’ plans and making them unhappy just to be together on Christmas:
    • They make Sam Sharp angry enough to break up with Luna after they made a fake phone call out of Mick Swagger.
    • They trick Lori and Bobby into driving back to the Louds’ house due to the bad weather.
    1. They get Luan Loud fired from her comedy gig at Sunset Canyon, destroying her brilliant relationship with her grandfather.
    2. They get Leni fired from Reinger's after stealing Tanya when she didn’t do anything wrong.
    3. They used Tanya when they were driving the Sharkodile.
    • They drove the Sharkodile to cancel the Loud family's plan to go to Miami.
    • Because of this, the Christmas Tree Light Ceremony at the Royal Woods Mall had to be canceled, which made Lily upset.
    • Plus, they took it to the Royal Woods Mall to tell Katherine Mulligan that it was not real, ending up destroying property from the Louds’ house and the Royal Woods Mall.
  11. Many characters in the franchise are absent (except the Louds, The McBrides, Bobby, Catherine Mulligan, RIP Hardcore, and whoever else was in the movie) just to upset the fans:
    • Lincoln's pet dog Charles, his pet cat Cliff, and his pet bird Walt, however his plush rabbit Bun-Bun did appear.
    • Out of all of the missing pets and items in the film, only Geo appeared on the poster, but he was not seen in the film, as stated in #11.
    • Multiple The Casagrandes characters (except for Bobby).
    • Speaking of The Casagrandes, Ronnie Anne and Bobby Santiago are the only ones from the series who showed up in The Loud House Movie.
    1. Mr. Grouse, the Louds' next-door neighbor. At least, he is not bossing everyone else around. To appear, the same guy who voiced King Julien in Madagascar and Uncle Ugo in Luca would voice him.
    • For one Christmas special, he was seen in "11 Louds a Leapin!".
    • Lincoln and Clyde's friends, Rusty, Stella, Liam, Zach, Paige, Girl Jordan, and Miss Christina.
    • All of Lucy's friends, including Haiku and Silas. Her toy Edwin was also gone.
    • Haiku appeared in The Loud House Movie, which was the only film she was in as an animated character.
    • Lynn Jr's sports teammates Paula, Maddie, Margo, and even among others.
    • Luna's friends (except for her crush Sam).
    • Leni's work friends, Fiona and Miguel, crushes Chaz and Scott, and school friends Jackee and Mandee.
    • Movie characters Angus, Morag (voice of Rachel House to appear), and the Ancestral Loud Family.
    • Luan's crush Benny (also Jack Dylan Grazer if he showed up) and best friend Maggie.
    • Lynn Sr's friends, Kotaro, Grant (named after Grant Palmer, Lincoln's first actor in the show), and Ted.
    • Antagonists like Chandler (Luca Paguro's voice to appear), Bratty Kid, Exterminator, The Super Mart Manager, The Judges from "Kings Of The Con", Lindsay Sweetwater, Stern Fern, The Millers, Lacey St. Clair, Hawk and Hank, Doug and Michelle, Vic, Lord Tetherby, and the aforementioned Morag also don't appear.
    • Even Lynn's Table is missing, too.
    • Flip, the owner of Flip's Food and Fuel.
    • The school staff like Principal Huggins, Mrs. Johnson, Coach Pacowski, Ms. DiMartino, Principal Rivers, Oliver, Mrs. Vaporciyan, Mrs. Salter, Chef Pat, Mr. Budden, Mrs. Bernardo, and Principal Ramirez are nowhere to be seen.
    • Lisa's robots, Mr. Reinforced Titanium Alloy Arms, Todd FriendBot 1000 Gravybot Darebot 1.0 and 2.0 Mr. Potty Bot, Touchdown Bot, and Lull-A-Bot are missing, although a lot of them appear in season 6.
    • Clyde's cats Cleopawtra and Nepurrtiti also don't appear.
    • Though this can be excused as Nickelodeon most likely didn't want to cram in a lot of these characters.
  12. False advertising: The poster shows Lincoln and Clyde tying The Loud family in Christmas lights, but it never happened in the actual film. Geo, one of the family pets, appears in the poster, but it's so misleading he doesn't appear at all in the film.
    • Geo himself is represented by a stock image of a hamster, and another stock image of a hamster ball. That is what you call being lazy at its highest level.
  13. The characters' height and inches (excluding their age) are odd in the movie:
    • Luna is taller than Leni. But in the cartoon, Leni is taller than Luna.
    • As stated earlier, Lily is almost taller than Lisa. In the cartoon, Lisa is taller than Lily, as Lisa is 3 years older than Lily.
    • Lynn is almost as tall (or almost taller) than Luan.
    • Luan is almost taller than Luna.
    • Luna is almost the same size as Lori.
    • Lola is almost taller than Lana.
    • Although they're twins, Lana is 2 minutes older than Lola, as said in the episode "Ties That Bind".
    • Out of all of the sizes of the siblings, Luna in this film (Lori in the original series) is the tallest, while Lynn Sr is the tallest out of every Loud member of the Loud family.
  14. There's even product placement for Microsoft, Apple, Ikea, and even Discord, which is very out-of-place for a Loud House movie.
  15. The ending is very despicable and is nonsensical, as all of the Louds’ plans that were canceled were back on track without any explanation when they could’ve done something else for Christmas.
  16. It gets pretty mean-spirited from time to time (especially the scenes with Lincoln and Clyde ruining the Louds’ plans).
  17. The apology that Lincoln and Clyde made was very nonsensical. They could've ended up in a youth detention center and gotten coal for Christmas. But in this film, it never happened but Lincoln had gotten 300 hours of community service while Clyde doesn't get punished.
    • However, the apology kind of made sense when the Loud family told Lincoln that family is forever. But as stated above, they should've ended up in a youth detention center and gotten coal for Christmas.
  18. This movie was made so Nickelodeon can rush this one out for the sake of Christmas. That's not to say it's a bad idea to make a Christmas movie, but what is a bad idea is that this whole movie feels like a shameless cash grab they wanted to make into live-action and commission a terrible plot for Nickelodeon to make more money.
  19. To add insult to the injury, a live-action series was planned after this judging by the facts that Nickelodeon either did not notice the negative criticism from fans, or they did notice and ignored the criticism by saying they do not care.
  20. What is even worse than ever is that this is where The Loud House is now a laughing stock to most people, even to the point it feels like it's now a soulless money maker than a thing of its own anymore. While SpongeBob has been marketed a lot by Nick itself, at least it's identity has barely even dropped and it has been given a break quite a few times before. The same cannot be said with The Loud House however, Nickelodeon took so much advantage of their franchise so much that it's quite easy to tell they have not given it a break one bit.
  21. Overall, much Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, Belle's Magical World, Transformers: The Last Knight, and Ice Age: Collision Course, this movie permanently ruined the reputation of The Loud House and has caused some more people to hate the show even though despite suffering from a nasty case of seasonal rot, the show was good before said seasonal rot.
  22. Awful direction from Jonathan Judge, who also directed two episodes of Blue's Clues for its final two seasons.
    • Morgan McGill, who played Lynn, experienced harassment on the internet from several Loud House fans who criticized her for not looking entirely like the character. Said The Loud House fans made insults and jokes targeted at Morgan McGill's appearance and acting skills, threatened to ruin her social media presence, and stated she should've never been chosen for the role of Lynn to begin with.
      • They initially thought Morgan McGill was an adult woman playing the character, said she had a large forehead and looked and acted too feminine to portray the tomboyish Lynn, and claimed she was not a real athlete, which was later proven false by her mother.
      • In particular, one fan accused her of being racist and homophobic, and even sent obscene artwork of Lynn Loud to Morgan McGill, who was 13 years old at the time.
        • They had additionally started a petition and attempted to contact Nickelodeon to get McGill kicked off the movie before it released. Some have speculated the bullying McGill faced was the reason why she did not reprise the role in The Really Loud House.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Only a few of the live-action characters from the film match their cartoon versions. Take Jahzir Bruno as Clyde McBride for example, who's also confirmed to be Clyde's new voice actor for season 6 of the original cartoon after Andre Robinson hit puberty and his voice changed. He was solid and brilliant at acting while the other cast wasn't.
    • Catherine Taber also reprises her role as Katherine Mulligan, and it's great to see her reprise her role from the cartoon.
  2. While there are mostly unfunny moments, it can have some funny moments.
    • The scene where Santa makes a confused face after Clyde told him that he has to go after Lincoln called him for a private meeting was funny.
  3. All of the costumes and sets look nice and are faithful to the cartoon.
    • The Loud House building in real life is still faithful to the cartoon version of the building.
  4. Lincoln gets partial repressions for his actions; he is still forced to do 300 hours of community service.
  5. The song "It's Christmas Time" sung by Sophia Woodward, with backup from the rest of the cast, was great.
  6. Despite how unlikable Lincoln was in the movie, at the very least he did have good intentions; he just wanted to keep his family together for the holidays.
    • All of the characters other than Lincoln and Clyde are likable.
    • Leni's characterization is surprisingly passable here, and she is a improvement over her season 5 counterpart.
  7. Excluding Clyde's voice, the entire cast of the Latin American Spanish dub of the show reprises their roles in the Latin American Spanish dub of this film.[3][4]
  8. The Really Loud House is a massive improvement over A Loud House Christmas.

Reception

Pre-release

A Loud House Christmas was met with mixed reviews from fans and received negative reviews from some critics. Some fans of the show were very skeptical about the film and found this to be very bad from the start because of its plot from when the movie was announced.

Release

A Loud House Christmas was met with mixed-to-negative reviews from critics and most fans from the series. It holds a 3.9/10 on IMDb, a 1/5 on Rate Your Music, a 1.8/5 on Letterboxd, and a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Trivia

  • Brian Stepanek, Jeff Bennett, and Catherine Taber are the only cast members from the cartoon to return from the original film as Lynn Loud Sr, Mick Swagger, and Katherine Mulligan respectively. The rest of the cast was unexpectedly replaced with other voice actors.
  • The Royal Woods mall in the film is the location of the dead North Dekalb Mall.
  • In this live-action movie, Lily Loud is in her season 5 and beyond design while in The Loud House Movie, she is in her previous design from seasons 1 to 4. That may be because The Loud House Movie actually took place during the events of season 4.
  • The film's special's runtime is a little much shorter than The Loud House Movie. If theatrical and animated, it would be extended up to 105 minutes, rather than just 65.
  • A television series (despite being set year round) is in development while the cartoon itself is renewed for a seventh season.
