Airborne Hero D-Day Frontline 1944 is a first-person shooter game developed by Asylum Games and published on November 25, 2004 by Russobit-M in Russia, and on January 10, 2006 in Europe by IncaGold. Dégriff'Soft published the game in France.
Plot
The game takes place during World War II, more precisely on June 6th, 1944. Peter Smith, a lieutenant and one of the members of the Allied airborne landing forces, must defeat the Nazi army alone.
Why It's No Hero
- The plot is very lame and generic and sounds like something from a typical history lesson a regular student would have. Basically, a lieutenant must defeat an evil army alone but was not given a specific reason why. Even Wolfschanze 1944: The Final Attempt had a far more interesting plot.
- The main menu is just recycled from Ardennes Offensive, another bad game by Asylum Games. Therefore, it should be no surprise that the options are pretty identical, including the cursor, font, and the sound effects when you hover your cursor on the option.
- The graphics are absolutely atrocious, with horribly stiff and wooden animations and trees that look like they were ripped from Google Images and poorly upscaled with an extremely ugly look. The models also look like they were cut from a bunch of cardboards and look as if someone puked on them. The game in general looks like an extremely early 3D game released for the PlayStation in 1996, which is very unacceptable as the game was actually released in 2004-2006.
- The artificial intelligence can be described as a complete failure that makes Countdown Vampires' A.I. look very smart in comparison. Most of the time, the enemies don't turn around and notice that you're behind them, and sometimes they don't even recognize that they're walking in front of a wall or stones, which is just laughable and makes you think they never even learned how to recognize walls and as if they were being lazy.
- Abysmal sound effects; the sound of the enemy dying sounds like as if it was recorded by an edgy guy who did not want to provide the voice for the game; the sounds for shooting weapons are ear-bleeding and sound like as if someone hit a metallic trash can with a brick; the sound of reloading your weapon sounds like hitting a stone with a knife; and the explosion sounds like a stock sound effect that you could easily find on YouTube.
- The music from the main menu is pretty lame and sounds like something you would hear in any TV show talking about history rather than a game taking place during a war.
- For some reason, if you drive a tank into a tree, the tree does not even fall down, which makes absolutely no sense as tanks are known for being very heavy and being able to destroy anything that's weaker than them, including signposts and trees. But here, the trees are as if they were made out of hard metal and even the tank cannot even make them fall.
- The way how Peter holds most of the weapons is facepalm-inducing and makes you want to fall onto the floor after looking at him holding the weapon. It looks as if he never even learned how to hold a weapon and holds them like a newbie.
- The third level is the absolute worst level in the entire game and is so frustrating that it makes you want to smash your keyboard out of rage and never play this game ever again. First, you have to be really careful to make sure a sniper does not notice you, as it can result in a cheap death. Second, all grenades sent at the towers must hit with full, 100% accuracy, or they will either bounce off and hit Peter straight, or simply explode in his hand. Third, before you move to some distant place, you must finish off every opponent as they can somehow shoot through walls. Fourth, you have to save everything, from first aid kits to shells for the panzerfaust. It is so ridiculously difficult that even Snake from Metal Gear Solid wouldn't be able to complete this map on his first try.
- Several bugs and glitches:
- The scaling of the objects is so terrible to the point sometimes you cannot even shoot an enemy even if it looks like you should be able to do it.
- Sometimes the enemies either get stuck in walls or somehow go through them.
- Sometimes you cannot destroy a necessary box even if it was highlighted a second earlier.
Reception
Airborne Hero D-Day Frontline 1944 was negatively received by many players and YouTubers, commonly criticising the graphics, gameplay, and the similarities to Ardennes Offensive. The game currently has a 3.6/10 rating on Gamepressure.[1]
