Airport Simulator 2014 is a simulation game developed and published by UIG Entertainment for Microsoft Windows. It was released on December 19, 2013. It is notable for being one of the lowest-rated games on Steam and is considered as one of the worst games of all-time.
Gameplay
Passenger Plane
First, the player has to take the stairs to the gate, then he has to take the bus to the gate, then he has to take the baggage car to the gate, then he has to take the inside cleaning to the gate, then he has to take the outside cleaning to the gate, and so on.
Cargo Plane
First, the player has to drive the freight car to the gate, then drive the exterior cleaner to the gate, take everything back to the garage, and so on.
Why It Can't Take Off
- Horrible graphics and model quality, even on the highest settings, the graphics are more like a game released in 2000, the textures are low resolution and the models are quite angular and makes it look like you're playing on weak mobile.
- No tutorial or any tips to indicate the new players what they're supposed to do which can make the player very confused and get lost in the game.
- Extremely repetitive gameplay: the whole gameplay mostly consists of driving various ground service vehicles over and over again, as described in a Steam review. In addition to all this, the gameplay loops almost in a circle because it consists of completing several tasks and repeating them endlessly.
- If it's a passenger plane:
- Drive stairs to gate.
- Drive bus to gate.
- Drive luggage wagon to gate.
- Drive interior cleaning to gate.
- Drive exterior cleaning to gate.
- If it's a cargo plane:
- Drive cargo wagon to gate.
- Drive exterior cleaning to gate.
- Drive everything back to the garage.
- If it's a passenger plane:
- Every single ground vehicle in this game is so slow, even people on foot can outrun them, thus making the gameplay even more boring and tedious. It also doesn't help that vehicles and buildings are far away, which takes up to an hour to reach them.
- All of the vehicles' (including planes) physics are absolutely awful. Whenever you crash the vehicle with another vehicle at a snail pace speed, both vehicles will be thrown away and flipped as if gravity does not exist. On top of all that, these vehicles sink into the ground leaving only the wheels behind.
- To add more insult to injury, every interaction in this game (such as cargo loading) are done in real time, which means you have to wait at least 5 minutes until you can do another interaction (which you have to wait for it to complete over and over again), which further intensifies the boredom accompanying the game.
- The game features a "helper" that you can hire to drive a vehicle for you, but this essentially disables your only interaction in the whole game, essentially making the game technically unplayable (as all you can do is just watching the helpers do the work for you). All in all, this is probably the most useless mode in the history of the entire video game industry.
- There are NO player and passenger models in the game. When you have loaded passengers with a bus, you can only hear the chatting voice but cannot see the models. The only human model in this game is the helper models, which were of poor quality.
- In fact, even steering wheel animations are absent.
- False advertising: The developers stated that there are "many management and business options for the expansion of terminals and extension of runways", while in reality, your only interaction is to drive a vehicle and wait over and over again until you can hire the helper to drive a vehicle for you.
- Countless bug and glitches. For example, various vehicles can randomly get stuck in the tunnel, and the whole airport will sometimes disappear when you've load a saved game, also as mentioned above, vehicles can sink into the ground.
The Only Redeeming Quality
- The front cover seems to be pretty good looking.
Reception
Airport Simulator 2014 was the worst-rated game on Steam until the release of eFootball 2022 with "Overwhelmingly Negative" reviews based on 533 reviews as of March 2020. Most of "positive" reviews is either sarcastic or poking the fun of the game's quality. The game is also considered as one of the worst games of all-time.
Legacy
Due to extremely poor reception, UIG Entertainment (later known as UIE Games) later sold the license of Airport Simulator franchise to Rondomenia, who in-turn created an even worse sequel Airport Simulator 2015, the franchise was abandoned due to poor reception until 2019, when Toplitz Productions revived the series once more time and created Airport Simulator 2019, which is panned with negative reception as well. In 2021, UIE Games has bought back the series to themselves and released Airport Simulator 3: Day & Night. Due to UIE Games have not learned the lesson from previous failures, the game was once again bombarded with negative reviews.[1]
Due to being known as "the worst game on Steam" and how buggy it is, it has gained notoriety and popularity, as it was being played by various game streamers such as Vinesauce, Nerd3, and GrayStillPlays, who's in-turn exploit the game's glitchy physics.
