Alekhine's Gun (previously known as Death to Spies 3: Ghost of Moscow) is a stealth action video game set during the World War II and Cold War, developed and published by Maximum Games. The game features open maps with multiple methods to complete levels. It was released on March 1, 2016 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Background

Originally, the game was announced under the name Death to Spies 3: Ghost of Moscow by the series' publisher 1C Company and was being developed by Haggard Games, the same company that made the previous games. For an unknown reason, in 2011 1C withdrew from the publishing contract, leading to Haggard having serious problems with the development due to the lack of funding. Attempts to crowdfund the money for the game were made two times. First on Indiegogo in 2013, but after it went unsuccessful, the second attempt was made on Kickstarter a year later, unfortunately, only to fail too. In June 2014, the development and publishing rights were given to the American company Maximum Games, who decided to rename the game to "Alekhine's Gun", but it didn't save the game from the troubles, as it got delayed twice. It was finally released on March 1, 2016 and was negatively received due to being extremely broken and unpolished.

Why It Sucks

  1. Despite it being a stealth shooter, the stealth mechanic is totally broken. You'll only get spotted if you do a weird pose.
  2. The AI is totally broken. Even if you kill everyone in front of the enemies' commander, he'll never notice you.
  3. The ladders are broken. You can't go up the ladder straightly and you will get stuck at the last step of the ladder, the only way to get up is moving obliquely on it.
  4. Broken physics. Any dead body will be placed like it doesn't have a skeleton.
  5. Outdated graphics, the game appears to look like an early PlayStation 3 game.
  6. Poor voice acting.
  7. Full of bugs and glitches, and the developers don't seem to care about it.
  8. Choppy framerate, at least on the console versions.
  9. The game frequently crashes.
  10. Poor animation. Most if not all times, characters are not even opening their mouths.
  11. Awful and cheap cutscenes.
  12. It is obvious that the game is unfinished, which is not surprising, given the troubled 6-year development.
  13. Overpriced on all platforms. It costs $30 USD (€30 in European countries), which is too much, considering how unpolished, outdated and broken the game is.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. At least it was released despite all the troubles it went through.
  2. Change of the setting from WW2 to Cold War is actually a nice move.
  3. The soundtrack is decent, especially the "Alarm" and "Bunker" tracks, which fit the game's tone and atmosphere.
  4. Developers released a v1.02 patch for PC and PS4 versions, that added several gameplay enhancements and fixed several of the game's bugs (i.e. getting stuck during the exit from one of the ships in the "Points on the Radar" level), making the game at least playable.

Reception

Alekhine's Gun has received negative reviews from critics, scoring 35/100 on Metacritic, and 35.00% on GameRankings.

Jason Bohn of Hardcore Gamer gave the game a 2 out of 5 saying, " The right ideas are in place, but everything about the execution falls flat on its face. Considering how much I wanted to enjoy this, the average player probably won’t be able to handle a full playthrough."

Angry Joe listed this game as 4th worst game of 2016, He described "So bad through, but hilariously good."
