Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, also known as AVP-R and Aliens vs. Predators 2 in some regions, is a 2007 science-fiction action-horror film that serves as a sequel to 2004’s Alien vs. Predator. Both movies serve as a cross-over between the Alien and the Predator franchise, a cross-over that was first established by Dark Horse Comics in 1989. The movie was directed by brothers Colin and Greg Strause, who are the founders of special-effects company Hydraulix. Unlike the first movie, which was rated PG-13, this movie was rated R.

Upon release, the movie was met with even worse reception than the first movie, from critics, viewers, and fans alike, earning a 12% on Rotten Tomatoes when compared to the first movie’s 21% rating.

Plot

Shortly after the events of the first film, the PredAlien (Tom Woodruff, Jr.) that grew out of the Predator Scar wreaks havoc in a Predator ship carrying facehuggers, causing it to crash near Gunnison, Colorado. One of the Predators who survived the crash sends a distress signal which is caught by another Predator, Wolf (Ian Whyte), who then goes to Earth to eliminate the Aliens (including the Warriors and the Grids).

Eventually, the city's residents, such as Dallas Howard (Steven Pasquale), Kelly O’Brien (Reiko Aylesworth), and Eddie Morales (John Ortiz), become trapped in the middle of the battle between the two alien species, forcing them to band together in order to survive.

Why There's No Peace for This 'Requiem' of a Movie

  1. To get the cat out of the bag, you can barely see for most of the movie, which said movie takes place at night. Even the scenes that take place during day are only slightly visible!
    • There's a behind-the-scenes video of the film's cinematographer complaining about not having the equipment to light the sets properly, suggesting that there were budget problems.
  2. The human characters are forgettable, unlikable, and underdeveloped one-dimensional cardboard cutouts. In fact, some of them are pretty much slasher movie clichés and the mother and the daughter are rip-offs to Ripley and Newt from Aliens. This is made worse by the abysmal acting, especially stealing similar ideas from Marvel's Spider-Man comics.
    • Ricky Howard is a rip-off of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, who is a pizza delivery man and has the similar nerdy behavior as Spider-Man is.
    • Dallas, Ricky's brother, is a generic thief despite caring too much about his brother.
    • Dale Collins is a rip-off of Flash Thompson, Peter's/Spider-Man's bully, who steals Ricky's car keys and throws them at the sewer just for smittening his girlfriend.
      • He's no better when he continued to beat up Ricky for smittening Jesse in a pool and is later killed by a Xenomorph after trying to survive the invasion.
    • Jesse Salinger, Dale's girlfriend, is a rip-off of one of Spider-Man's love interests, Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy, she is killed off near the end of the film.
  3. There are three groups of characters, and it feels like an overload. Taking one of the groups out, probably the teen group, would have been better.
  4. The film has barely anything to do with the first movie; the closest this movie gets to a link is Scar's corpse, and the PredAlien.
  5. Product placement like the Nokia phone.
  6. At several points in the movie, the PredAlien impregnates women who are already pregnant throughout the movie. It breaks the lore that is already established by the Alien movies, regarding the Aliens’ life cycle.
  7. There are action scenes that are disappointing or hard to see.
  8. The beginning of the movie ripped off the opening scene from Alien 3.
  9. The Brothers Strause had no directing experience, and the film acts like an advertisement for them to make more movies, like Skyline, though it was a slight improvement to this film. All that changed when Beyond Skyline was release.
  10. Misleading title: Despite the name, the predator doesn't actually fight most of the aliens, and the word "Requiem" in the title was the definition for Christianity, in which the film doesn't relate.
    • The movie was originally going to be titled "Aliens vs. Predator: Survival of the Fittest" but was later dropped.
  11. Some lines from the movie are just reused lines from the other Alien and Predator films, and they're really hampered.
  12. The last scene is nothing more but sequel baiting, which is kind of pointless since there was never a third Alien vs. Predator movie. With that being said, this film killed the Alien vs. Predator film series.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Ridley Scott continued the Alien franchise with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, and the Predator franchise continued with Predators,
  2. Brian Tyler's score is passable.
  3. The Predator (Wolf) is an awesome character.
  4. Some decent characters, like Ricky, Dallas, and Jesse, despite what WTNPFT'R'OAM#2 says about them.
  5. The PredAlien and Xenomorphs are pretty decent threats.
    • The designs, costumes, and puppets from the Predator, Xenomorphs, and PredAlien are very well done.
  6. The practical effects and gore are neatly done.

Reception

The film has a rating 4.6/10 on IMDb and a very low score of 12% on Rotten Tomatoes on the Tomatometer based on 77 reviews.
