American Fung is the 17th episode of Season 10 of American Dad! and the 189th episode of the series overall. It aired on May 25, 2015, on TBS and was viewed by 0.91 million households.

Plot

A Chinese businessman named Fung Wah introduces the episode as the new owner after Seth MacFarlane gets bored with the series and trades it for a shoe factory. He assures watchers that things will remain as they have known.

Why It Should Be Lobotomized

  1. For starters, this episode is completely out of place as it is something that would fit more in the modern seasons of Family Guy because of how gruesome and disturbing it is, not American Dad.
    • Besides that, Stan is completely out of character in this episode as not only does he forget about his wife's anniversary, but he also locks her up in an Asylum, and aside from almost getting a lobotomy, Stan does not really receive any punishment for his horrendous behavior in this episode, sure he was mean-spirited in other episodes but he didn't go that far.
  2. As usual, It's another Stan forgetting about Francine's Anniversary and needing to find a way to redeem himself plot and it gets tiresome, how is Francine still married at this point?
  3. Fung Wah serves as nothing but filler, and it didn't need to be in this episode.
  4. Bullock isn't any better in this episode as he is the one who suggested that Stan should put Francine in a psychiatric ward and admits to doing something like this himself. Bullock also does not receive any punishment for his suggestion.
  5. This episode is basically a Francine torture episode as she gets put into an asylum even though she is healthy, is forced to stay there for over three days, is forbidden from leaving because she lashed out at Stan, and is almost lobotomized, this makes the viewers feel terribly bad for her.
  6. The scene where Francine screams as she is being dragged to the asylum is unsettling and disturbing because of how realistic the scream is.
  7. The infamous and horrendous lobotomy scene is absolutely disturbing, even for a mature cartoon.
    • Although at least it didn't show the full scene as it was cut right when the drill was about to go through Stan's brains.
  8. Nonsensical Ending: Fung Wah says the asylum plot was resolved offscreen, so we never see how it ends. It also shows some fake ads about a Chinese Resort with some sort of Mickey Mouse in Chinese, it then cuts to the last scene where the Smith family speaks Chinese and does something.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Francine tells Stan that she hates him for what he did, something that the audience and viewers can agree on.
  2. Francine is the only likable character in this episode, and we do feel bad for what she had to go through.
  3. Despite how awful Stan acts in this episode, he at least actually attempted to rescue Francine from the Asylum, showing that he actually felt remorse for what he did, despite failing and being captured.
  4. Good animation and voice acting like usual.
  5. Despite how disturbing the lobotomy scene is, at least it doesn't show the full scene of Stan's brains being drilled as it ends exactly before that happens.

Reception

The episode was badly received by critics and fans and caused them to take their hatred out on Stan Smith for being a cruel and neglectful husband to Francine, being a jerk, and constantly forgetting Francine's Anniversary. American Fung is considered by many fans to be the absolute worst episode of American Dad! and it is currently the lowest-rated episode of not just the entire show but also any show created by Seth MacFarlane on IMDb with a rating of 4.0/10.

Trivia

  • This is the lowest rated episode in the IMDb in the entire series.
