An Oasis of Hope! is an episode from Pokémon the Series: XY Kalos Quest, it is the thirteenth episode of Pokémon the Series: XY Kalos Quest and is overall the sixty-first episode of the Pokémon XY series.
Overview
The Pokémon in the Lumious Badlands confront a bully.
Why It's a Hopeless Episode!
- The plot of the episode is very poor, as it's literally a generic bully episode, while Pokémon does have episodes like this, this one in particular does it wrong.
- The Grumpig in this episode is a horrible character; he bullies the Spoink and steals their food without any reason.
- Team Rocket had no reason to be in this episode.
- There are many plot holes in this episode. For example, why doesn't Ash and Co. just get Officer Jenny to stop Grumpig?
- Grumpig's change of tone is very forced; in the first half of the episode, he is a snarky bully, but after being defeated by newly-evolved Sliggoo, he becomes an utter coward begging for Team Rocket to help him, out of all the times, why now?
- A lot of predictable moments, such as Ash and Co giving in when Team Rocket has Grumpig torture the now hypnotized Spoink.
- Very poor filler episode, such as the battle with Grumpig.
- The episode also becomes a very cruel Dedenne torture episode in the middle as he gets beaten up by Grumpig while Goomy gets the keys to free Ash and Co. from the cage while trying to fight back. All the while, Dedenne is screaming in pain while Bonnie is screaming in fear, and it gets annoying fast.
- Granted. Dedenne has gone through worse treatment than this (such examples include being in the previous episode "Going For The Gold!"), but at least Dedenne was not literary beaten to a pulp by a Pokémon four times his size!
- The infamously cruel and mean-spirited scene were Ash literally gets hit by Grumpig's Iron Tail.
- Grumpig is also a very poor idea for a secondary antagonist. If you think about it, he literary has absolutely no reason to be an arrogant bully to the Spoinks. Grumpig is just hungry and wants something to eat, but rather than ether finding his own food or politely asking one of the Spoinks if they could share their berries with him, Grumpig instead teams up with Team Rocket so he can then bully the Spoink and steal their food.
- Although Grumpig does realize the error of his ways after Team Rocket gets defeated, he never apologized to Ash and Co. for how he treated both Ash and Dedenne, making it very shallow.
- Unfortunately, you can't say that this episode is non-canon, as this is the episode that Goomy evolves into Sliggoo, as well as learning Dragon Breath, evolving episodes are, indeed, canon.
Hopeful Qualities
- Goomy evolving into Sliggoo is handled very well.
- Some funny moments here and there.
- While the episode is unfortunately cannon to the series, on the positive note, at least Grumpig doesn't re-appear in future episodes after this.
- Although the scene where Grumpig out-of-nowhere becomes a wimp is very forced, the scene were one of the main Spoink's giving Grumpig a berry is a very sweet moment.
