Astronaut Ryan Found an Alien Puppy in Space is an animated webisode of Ryan's World.
Plot
Combo Panda finds a mysterious green puppy named Ozzie, and shows it to his friends, but soon they realize something isn't right.
Why You Won’t Find It In Space
- The Flash animation is extremely low-quality, and the choppy movements of everything make it look like a storyboard. It's so bad to the point where it makes the Adobe Character animation normally used in the franchise look like The Amazing World of Gumball in comparison. Even Flash content made 20 years ago had far better visuals than this, such as Pico's School and Happy Tree Friends.
- First of all, the character movements are extremely stiff and choppy, which is understandable for an animatic, but not for the finished animation; they were likely animated using only key-poses. The character animations are at their absolute laziest during the scene where Ryan and his friends play with Ozzie, which is also filler.
- Secondly, when the characters speak, their mouths stay open and don't move. Again, this is commonly used only in storyboards and animatics, and not in the completed animation.
- All the backgrounds consist of stolen clip-art from Shutterstock, which is very lazy and doesn't even remotely fit the style of the characters themselves.
- Alpha Lexa is unlikable, as she argues with Combo for no reason in several scenes.
- Misleading title: It's titled "Astronaut Ryan found an Alien Puppy in Space", but in the video itself, Combo Panda is the one who finds the puppy.
- The video title also uses noticeably bad grammar.
- The writing is basic and this results in a basic, mediocre plotline.
- There is also tons of filler. As mentioned above, the scene where Ryan and his friends play with Ozzie adds almost nothing to the plot, and even lasts for two and a half minutes.
- A few absolutely nonsensical "jokes". They don't land at all, and better jokes could have been generated by AI.
Redeeming Qualities
- Most of the characters are okay.
- Combo Panda especially is surprisingly likable in this webisode. He doesn't neglect or mistreat a new pet of his own, unlike the previous time he had to do so. He even gets to keep Ozzie, which is good karma. This episode is one of his best appearances as a character.
- Gus, while initially serving nothing to the plot, later explains to his friends that Ozzie has a collar, which suggests the latter has a home, making him very likable.
- Despite being mostly abysmal, the animation does noticeably improve and become more fluid during the ending scene.
Trivia
- This is the first webisode in the Galaxy Explorers series.
- Coincidentally, this episode premiered on the same day as the 2021 Haiti earthquake.
