BBBDAY! is the 15th episode of the 3rd season of Teen Titans Go!.

Synopsis

Jubilant that it's his special day, Beast Boy eagerly awaits his cake, singing, and presents. But when the other Teen Titans don't give a hoot about his birthday, Beast Boy inexplicably starts morphing between infant and elder— and it's up to the Titans to bring him back, through a not-so-exciting birthday party.

Why It's A BBBAD! Episode

  1. This episode is VERY CRUEL AND MEAN-SPIRITED as the Teen Titans (Their GO! versions) act like spoiled brats and the worst friends in the world for most of the episode, details will be listed below.
  2. Beast Boy was excited because it’s his birthday, but the Titans don’t celebrate it. Instead, they fight “murderous elephants”, causing him to have a pretend birthday party with his stuffed animals. Then, it turned out the Titans didn’t forget his birthday but DON’T LIKE to celebrate it, except Raven, who cares but not because she cares for him as a friend and person but because she HAS TO because of the so-called: “cosmic consequences”.
  3. The main premise is, it’s Beast Boy’s birthday and the Teen Titans don’t want to celebrate it, why? Because they think other people’s birthdays are boring because they have to eat food with saliva and melted candle wax on it, sing the “Happy Birthday” song, and watch the birthday person open presents, which is bad because it’s “not for [them].” THAT’S THE CRUELEST, SADISTIC AND MOST SELFISH THING IN THE WORLD TO SAY TO ANYONE! Also, that is not true because not all birthday parties are boring, depending on who organizes the party, birthday parties can be quite fun.
    • This lead to Beast Boy having a birthday party alone in his room with his plushies and it’s very sad to watch.
  4. To rub salt in the wound, the Teen Titans actually did not forget about Beast Boy’s birthday (except Raven, who actually forgot), just, as stated above that they don’t want to celebrate his birthday because it’s “gross and boring”.
  5. Raven tells the Titans that they have to celebrate Beast Boy’s birthday because of so-called “cosmic consequences”. These consequences are Beast Boy aging and deaging, it’s a ripoff of Steven Universe as all birthday episodes of Steven Universe feature the main character, aptly named Steven Universe, rapidly aging and deaging himself.
  6. The gag about the Titans not wanting to sing “Happy Birthday” because it’s copyrighted is pointless because the episode aired after the copyright got lifted.
  7. The center of the universe scene is very trippy and weird.
  8. The scene where Beast Boy blows out the candles is very disgusting to watch and is too drawn out.
  9. Bad moral: The moral of this episode simply boils down to, you celebrate a person’s birthday because you have to and you have to pretend to care about the person because birthday parties are a chore to go to.
  10. Beast Boy’s cake at the end is very disgusting.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Baby Beast Boy is cute.
  2. Beast Boy is the only likable Titan in this episode.
  3. Although outdated, the “Happy birthday” song gag is funny.
  4. At least Raven, who hated Beast Boy most of the time, remembers his birthday which means she still cared for him (kind of).
  5. Elderly Beast Boy’s stories are very funny.
  6. There is a somewhat funny moment where Baby Beast says random gibberish, waits a few seconds, and spits up on the ground.
  7. Good Ending: At least the Titans get their comeuppance at the end of the episode for they how they treated Beast Boy, by eating his saliva-ridden, smashed birthday cake.
  8. Birthday episodes that follow get better after this one, as the Titans see birthdays in a new light and are shown to care about each other’s birthdays. Like, the sequel episode, BBSFBDAY! is a huge improvement.

Reception

This episode received lots of criticism on various review sites and social media. People mainly complained about the Titans acting like spoiled brats and Beast Boy’s birthday being viewed as pointless is just insulting.

Trivia

  • This episode appears to be enlightening to the Teen Titans Go! crew because future birthday episodes viewed birthdays in a more positive light. Its sequel episode, BBSFBDAY! was an improvement.
