Baby Princess 2D/3D Paradise 0 is an OVA adaptation based on Sakurako Kimino's illustrated short stories Baby Princess. It was released on July 20, 2011, on Blu-ray as a 3D and 2D edition set with the title Baby Princess 3D Paradise 0 with special 3D-glasses and on DVD as a regular 2D edition with the title Baby Princess 2D Paradise 0. This is the only anime episode of the Baby Princess series.
Plot
A high school senior named Yotaro thought he was an only child — until he met his real mother and discovered that she has 19 daughters, from several months to 18 years old. He ends up living with his "true family."
Bad Qualities
- First off, the premise of Baby Princess 2D/3D Paradise 0, much like the short story series it was based on, is gross, because despite being part of the harem genre, the main character Yōtarō is surrounded by 19 girls who are literally his biological sisters, and there are also a lot who are only little girls, which is effortlessly incest and creepy.
- It would be better if the girls around Yōtarō were unrelated to him and all close to his age, but nope. The premise literally includes 19 biological sisters, both teenagers and little girls.
- One of the posters even show all the girls, including the little ones, posed on a bed to resemble a dakimakura/body pillow, which is also quite creepy.
- Aside from that, the other main problem with this OVA is that it's lacking on character and plot development, instead being heavier on fan service like a lot of harem anime series. In fact, the middle part of the OVA is literally just several minutes of gratuitous fan service that don't build up for anything or make the plot progress or go anywhere. The only scene in the OVA that at least had some sense of thrill or storytelling is the scene where Yotaro and his sisters go swimming.
- While it may not be the worst case here compared to things such as the 3rd OVA of To Love-Ru, it still could have used a lot more storytelling and development, rather than just selling itself for fan service.
- On the topic of fan service, it's more or less just the typical kinds of things you'd see in a lot of Ecchi anime. Additionally, it's also worth noting that since there are many little girls who are in this series for the fan service, it comes off as child sexualization even if there are no graphic nudity shots for the little girls.
- There are more than a few unnecessarily glossed up close-ups of the privates of girls.
- There's a brief scene where Mari, who is only 5 years old, tells Yōtarō to clean her feet which are covered in ice cream, implying that she wants him to lick and suck on her feet for sexual pleasure, which is just disgusting.
- The seductive background music also makes the scene worse.
- The beach volleyball scene is purposely made overshadowed by the close-up shots of the bouncing breasts of the girls who are busty along with the fact that every breast jiggle shot has a cartoony bounce sound effect, which is silly.
- The hot spring scene is just filler and it's just there to show the characters naked.
- After that, it's literally just scenes of a few of Yōtarō's sisters obsessing over him even though he's their biological brother, with Haruka's scene being the filthiest as it shows Haruka naked and with liquid flowing down her body with close-up shots too.
- Aside from that, Rikka and Hotaru tying up Yōtarō and pinning him down is just weird and it makes them come off as creepy.
- Thankfully, all three girls end up failing their attempts when they are interrupted.
- The "emotional" moments with Yōtarō and his sisters are hard to tolerate because the scenes are that of romance scenes; the characters are siblings, so it just comes off as pretty disgusting. Watching some of the girls kiss Yotaro on the lips is just plain incest.
- Some of the transitions to the next scenes are a bit choppy, which is another result of the OVA being too reliant on fan service, such as the transition between the hot springs scene and the scenes where Yōtarō gets sexually harassed by a few of his sisters in particular; the writers could have shown what happened in between the hot springs scene and the scene that comes after it because the gap in between does feel a bit too big and it does end the scene in a bit too much of a cliffhanger.
- The ending of the OVA is gross as it shows Hikaru struggling to think whether she has romantic feelings for Yōtarō or not, which is not really anything meaningful because once again, it's incest.
- This OVA is also the only thing in the Baby Princess series to be made in anime form, and as it stands, it fails to truly work as a whole.
Good Qualities
- The opening scene which counts all the girls with the use of some neat visual effects and a woman saying the numbers, the intro, and outro are pretty creative and entertaining.
- Pretty catchy soundtrack, with the opening song and ending song being pretty upbeat.
- Pretty good animation and art style that looks better than the styles in the light novel and manga. Besides that, the visuals do look pretty cool.
- Good Japanese voice acting.
- As mentioned above, the scene where the main character and his sisters go swimming is still nice for the most part despite the fan service, and it has the most storytelling out of all the scenes in the OVA.
- Some moments are pretty cute and sweet, such as Yōtarō playing with his little sisters and even some scenes where all the siblings spend time with each other.
- Despite being shoehorned in just for fan service, the hot springs scene is actually done in a relatively creative fashion.
- Watching Yōtarō trying to cover his crotch with a small towel before Hikaru walks to him with a towel covering her front is funny. Also, the close-up shot of Hikaru's butt just slightly censored by the steam is fan service that doesn't go too far (nor is it glossed over too much) and has just enough attraction level.
- Yōtarō swimming underwater and trying to hide while many of his sisters enter the pool is kind of fun to watch.
- The moment where Yōtarō rises up from the water after running out of breath and revealing himself to his sisters (while also inadvertently revealing his nudity to them) is kind of hilarious, despite the mean-spirited part where Tsurara repeatedly hits Yōtarō's head for accidentally lifting her up while rising out of the water, though the two of them fall in the water and it ends with Mari trying to make sure Yōtarō is alright while Sora giggles, which does keep the scene from ending in an overly mean-spirited way.
- Haruka, Hotaru, and Rikka's shocked reactions while they blush at the sight of Yōtarō in the pool with them, including the fact that he's naked, are cute.
- The reactions of all the little girls who are in the bath (Sora, Mari, Nijiko, Mizuki, and Sakura) upon seeing their naked brother in the bath with them are so innocent that it's adorable.
Reception
It has a score of 6.4/10 on MyAnimeList.
Trivia
- Tsurara Amatsuka was voiced by Saki Fujita, who also voiced the popular Vocaloid Hatsune Miku. Ironically, Tsurara's character design, especially her anime design, looks a lot like Miku, but with different eye and hair color.
