Berserk (2016) (Japanese: ベルセルク) is a 2016 anime television series based on the late Kentaro Miura's Berserk manga and a sequel to the Golden Age Arc film trilogy. This is a television adaptation of the manga after the 1997 anime of the same name, covering the Conviction arc from the manga.

Plot

"The Black Swordsman" Guts is forever pursued by deadly demons, who are attracted to him, due to a magical brand on his neck. His life's goal is to free himself, and his lover Casca, of this inescapable curse. His other life's goal is gain vengeance on his former best friend Griffith, who his sacrificed former Band of Mercenaries, to obtain demonic powers of his own. The giant "Dragon Slayer" sword, the mischievous Elf Puck and a growing band of misfit companions aid Guts in his violent quest for vengeance and redemption.

Why Guts Can Get Defeated By This

  1. The main problem with this series is its horrendous CGI animation as it ranges from ugly, poor, and just straight up terrible, In comparison, the original 1997 anime had really good animation that is infinitely FAR better than this, and the original came out almost 20 years before this.
    • Not to mention, but the Golden Age Arc movies also have animation that is also amazingly well-done in comparison to this series.
    • Plus when they make facial expressions in the series it comes off as weird, uncanny, and outright laughable
  2. Any recurring characters from the original are barely recognizable, having lost the original personality traits that defined them, making the audience hard to care about them.
  3. Like in the previous adaptation, some elements are modified or removed, an example of this is the Lost Children chapter being skipped which can leave a lot of plotholes.
  4. Terrible transitions and sound effects that looks/sounds like a poor YouTube animation most infamously with the Dragonslayer clanging like a frying pan.
  5. Idiot Move: the first episode adapts the Black Swordsman arc (which is the shortest arc in the manga) but the rest of the episodes adapt the Conviction and Millenium Falcon arcs.
  6. The story moves too fast in contrast to the original.
  7. The camera angles are bizarre making it even harder to keep your eyes on the screen.
  8. The CG quality constantly switching from hand-drawn and CG animation modeled in the same scene, which gets very distracting.
  9. Cause of the animation many of the action scenes are horribly done.
  10. The anime ended on a cliffhanger with it ended with Schierke having a vision of the Kushan Empire war but we don't get to see it making this anime utterly pointless.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The new series does contain some new characters of intrigue and sheds some light on some elements from the original series that weren't fully explained.
  2. The opening theme songs (Inferno and Sacrifice) are amazing.
  3. Some of the hand-drawn scenes in the show are actually the best part of the animation.
  4. Good voice acting in both Japanese and English.
  5. Guts is still an awesome character, since he still managed to keep most of his charm and is still likable.
  6. The Blu-ray version is decent fixing much of the animation mistakes.
  7. This had a lot of potential to be a good continuation to the original 1997 anime, or the Golden Age film trilogy, but due to these reason it did horribly.

Reception

The anime was universally panned by critics, anime fans, and fans of the Berserk franchise because of cutting out many things from the manga, poor sound effects, ans overall its horrible animation. not only it is considered the worst thing to come out of the Berserk franchise but one of the worst anime reboots of all time.
