Beverly Hills Chihuahua is a 2008 American family comedy film produced by Walt Disney Pictures, the first in the Beverly Hills Chihuahua series. It is directed by Raja Gosnell and was released on October 3, 2008. The films stars Piper Perabo, Jamie Lee Curtis and Manolo Cardona as the human leads and Drew Barrymore, George Lopez and Andy Garcia in voice-over roles. The plot centers on a Chihuahua, Chloe, who gets dognapped in Mexico and has to escape from an evil Doberman, El Diablo, with a help from a lonely German Shepherd, Delgado and a hyperactive male Chihuahua, Papi, who has a desperate crush on her.
Why It Should Get Kicked Out of Beverly Hills
- Several scenes are nothing but pure filler, such as Papi's friends all getting adopted by random people, Rachel and Sam's relationship with each other, Chico and Manuel trying to steal Chloe's collar (which is completely random) and The Day of The Dead sequence (which makes no sense).
- There are a lot of lazy and poorly written clichés.
- Chloe has the lazy spoiled rich dog cliché.
- Near the end of the film, it seems as if Chloe is dead (when she's actually passed out), which we've already seen at least 30 times before.
- Papi has the hopeless romantic cliché.
- The plot is very poor and lazily written, and have plot holes such as Delgado somehow regaining his lost sense of smell from Chloe's collar, despite not being able to smell things.
- It could've just worked as an animated film, and not as a cliché live-action film.
- Poor CGI and visual effects. The mountain cats, for example, are clearly fake looking.
- A lot of stereotypes against Dobermans, Latin Americans (specifically Mexicans) and rich people.
- The Spanish-speaking language starts out fine but as the movie progresses, it just gets more annoying.
- Poor and weak acting, especially from veteran actors such as Jamie Lee Curtis.
- A lot of bad ideas for shooting places. One of them is when Delgado and Chloe jump off the train and into a desert. The desert seems to be greener than desert-ish.
- Papi can be really annoying and obnoxious at random times, as well as Chico, Manuel, Chloe, etc.
- Lazy and below-average musical score, that overuses dated songs (such as "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred) from the early 2000s and earlier.
- The infamous "Chihuahua" song at the end of the movie is annoying and unbearable.
- False advertising: The first trailer and posters made it look like Papi was to be the main character, but he is instead reduced to a side character, with Chloe as the actual protagonist.
- Product placements, such as Diet Coca Cola.
Redeeming Qualities
- The idea of a Chihuahua learning its ancestry is kinda cool; however and sadly, it was abysmally executed.
- The voice acting is actually pretty nice to hear.
- A few cute and sweet moments.
