Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is a 1989 American comedy film directed by Stephen Herek. The film stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter. It is the first film in the Bill & Ted film series, followed by two sequels, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991), and Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020), as well as an animated television series in 1990 entitled Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures.

Plot

Two seemingly dumb teenagers, Bill S. Preston, Esq. and Ted "Theodore" Logan, set off on a quest to prepare the ultimate historical presentation with the help of a time machine.

Why It's Excellent

  1. The idea of two teens traveling to the past in a time machine made by their future selves is very interesting.
  2. Great acting, from Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter, and George Carlin.
  3. Decent special effects.
  4. Likable characters, such as the aforementioned Bill and Ted, and their mentor Rufus.
  5. Funny moments such as Beethoven playing rock music on a keyboard while Joan of Arc exercises dances with a group of people and the 69 jokes.
  6. Good grasp of the source material, with many historical figures acting like themselves.
  7. Alongside Back to the Future it popularized the time-traveling genre, which has become highly overused in media a lot.
  8. The soundtrack is AWESOME, especially the heavy metal ones.
  9. Funny lines, with the best part being from Abe Lincoln himself: “LET’S PARTY ON, DUDES!”

Bad Qualities

  1. Some of the jokes can be tasteless or unfunny.
  2. The effects may have not aged well, even by 80's standards.
  3. Plot hole: How did Bill manage to quickly remove his armor if the other knights were chasing him for like, five seconds?
  4. It can be inappropriate at times even for a PG rating.

Reception

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure received generally positive reviews and was a success at the box office, grossing $40.5 million against a $6.5 million budget, on Metacritic, which assigns a score of 100, gave the film a 50 indicating “mixed or average” reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has given a “fresh” rating of 81%.

Trivia

  • The name of the title was mentioned by Rhodey alongside some time-travel-oriented films in Avengers: Endgame.
