Black Myth: Wukong is a 2024 action role-playing game developed and published by Game Science. The game is inspired by the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West and follows an anthropomorphic monkey based on Sun Wukong from the novel.
Black Myth: Wukong was released for PlayStation 5 and Windows on August 20, 2024, with an Xbox Series X/S version to be released at a later date. The game received generally favorable reviews from critics. It sold 20 million units in its first month and is one of the fastest-selling games. An expansion for the game is planned for release.
Why It Goes To The West
- First of all, the game is a great idea, a soul-like game with Chinese myth, mostly based on Journey of the West.
- Amazing and stunning graphics that feel realistic and look like you're watching CGI and live-action movies, thanks to Unreal Engine 5.
- Great and tight controls.
- Good voice acting; both English and Chinese.
- Great character design, especially for Wukong themselves.
- Great gameplay and it is soul-like, you need to battle against enemies and bosses with patience and reflexes, and you're never to rush the attack, otherwise, you'll get killed.
- Speaking of gameplay, the difficulty, while quite hard, is challenging, some bosses require patience and reflexes (As mentioned above in WIGTTW#6).
- Tons of bosses; there are over a hundred bosses, these bosses require specific patterns to dodge and after that, you need to attack immediately before the enemies attack you.
- There are tons of amazing scenes here and there, such as:
- In the final boss, you're battling against Erlang and must fight first. After that, you're battling against four giant kingdoms, which is the best final boss fight ever. It looks like you're controlling the giant robot in soullike style, this is easily one of the best and most stunning boss fights in gaming history.
- After you defeat the final boss, you're battling against Stone Monkey and Great Sage, which was a true final boss, which is resembling Wukong himself.
- In the final boss, you're battling against Erlang and must fight first. After that, you're battling against four giant kingdoms, which is the best final boss fight ever. It looks like you're controlling the giant robot in soullike style, this is easily one of the best and most stunning boss fights in gaming history.
- There are tons of spells to choose from, each spell can be anything, like a spell to increase the attack and defenses, and you can transform into an animal.
- You can transform into an animal or something to increase the attack and defenses, but only limit the time to do it. But you can transform again in many situations.
- You can clone'em to attack the bosses, which is satisfying. But before being warned, you must upgrade the skill point to unlock the spell skills.
- You can upgrade the characters by finding better armor and weapons for better defense and attacks.
- Black Myth: Wukong presents an alternative interpretation of Journey to the West, which could be considered as creative.
- Tons of areas to explore and what's more important is collecting the collectibles. This collectible is evidence of the lore and myths.
- With tons of areas to explore and tons of bosses, the game has tons of replay value if you're playing this game again, learn the pattern and get a true final boss by finding the secret area and finding rare items.
Bad Qualities
- While you can explore anything, some areas are plagued with invisible walls, which can be annoying for some players, but to be fair, this is a semi-linear game, in similar veins to Dark Souls games.
- Some bosses can be impossible due to fast-paced attacks that are impossible to dodge and you need timing right to dodge the enemies' attacks.
- There are some technical hiccups even for higher PC and Console, and thankfully, this problem has been patched since launch.
Reception
"You fucked it up!/You done fucked it up!" |
The game received generally favorable reviews from critics. It sold 18 million units within two weeks, making it one of the fastest-selling games of all time.
Black Myth: Wukong fandom in China has become controversial, mostly because Chinese Black Myth: Wukong fans have been actively harassing or doxxing people who are perceived as threatening the reputation of the game, the developer, and the publisher. As a result, some people start to dislike the fandom as well as the game, thanks to the toxicity in the Black Myth: Wukong fandom in China.
