Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan is an anime television series based on a light novel series created by Masaki Okayu. It aired on SKY PerfecTV! from March 13, 2005, to November 10, 2007.
Plot
The series revolves around Sakura Kusakabe, a Japanese high school student whose when an angel named Dokuro Mitsukai comes to live with him. She regularly kills or injures him in many different ways, which is played for laughs. Another angel named Sabato wants to protect Sakura from Dokuro but is almost always unsuccessful at doing so.
Why It's All Bloody and Gory
- While Dokuro herself is arguably the most-so of all, almost all of the characters are excessively cruel to Sakura, who takes the Butt-Monkey trope to a whole new level as he is constantly killed, mauled, or injured throughout the entire series, which is played for comedy. Needless to say, the violence in the anime is NOT funny.
- The reason Dokuro came to kill Sakura himself is supposed to prevent him from creating a machine that reverses the ages of women 20 years into the future. However, that doesn't excuse her absurdly cruel treatment of him, which includes stabbing, strangling, kicking, punching, and smashing him into pieces.
- Dokuro herself never gets any comeuppance for her treatment towards Sakura even once throughout the series, which makes her one of the absolute queens of Karma Houdinis and far worse than Coconut Fred in Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island. In fact, when Sakura is given a chance to return to his old normal lifestyle and get rid of Dokuro forever, he actually decides to stay with her and says he enjoys being murdered by her, implying that Sakura wants to stay in an abusive relationship with her for her benefit.
- A few of the students in Sakura's high school inexplicably have live-action heads of animals for no discernible reason whatsoever. Nickelodeon's Breadwinners and Disney's Fish Hooks do a similar thing with their background characters, but those are subtle.
- Sabato might be an even bigger Butt-Monkey than Sakura is, as she lives in a cardboard box under a bridge and regularly fails at protecting him from Dokuro.
- Every time Dokuro resurrects Sakura, she says and chants "Pipiru piru piru pipiru pi!" in a very high-pitched voice, which can get irritating real fast.
- The theme song not only shows the various disturbing things Dokuro does to Sakura in grotesque detail but outright states that the things she does are how she expresses her love for him. Seems like killing someone repeatedly and making their life miserable is considered expressing your love for them, right?
- There are moments where characters make very over the top expressions that are cringeworthy to look at.
- The theme song is also pretty annoying.
Redeeming Qualities
- Many talented English-dub voice actors are on this show, such as Wendee Lee, Johnny Young Bosch, Laura Bailey, Kirk Thornton, and Dorothy Elias Fahn. However, they're horribly miscast.
- The backgrounds in this series are really nice-looking in good CGI.
- Occasionally, it can be legitimately funny at the times.
- The animation is okay for an anime made in the 2000s.
Reception
It has a score of 6.7 on IMDb and 6.5 on MyAnimeList.
