Blue's Room is an American children's live-action puppet show based on the kids' animated Nick Jr. TV series Blue's Clues. It was created as a series of shorts in 2003 and shown at the end of the Blue's Clues on Nickelodeon in 2004, beginning with the sixth season premiere "Legend of the Blue Puppy". It later became a spin-off series, running from August 2, 2004 to March 29, 2007.
Plot
Moona grants Blue a special wish–a new place where she can talk and make new friends. In Blue's Room, Blue does various activities with her new playmates Roary the Dinosaur, Frederica (Fred for short), Dress-Up Chest, Doodle Board, and Polka Dots, among others.
Bad Qualities
- It was initially a segment placed at the end of the final season of Blue's Clues. It also caused several unnecessary changes to be made to the series because of this, the play Blue's Clues song was shortened to just one verse about all three pawprints instead of three verses describing each pawprint, the "So Long Song" was replaced by a generic goodbye song and the episode itself is much faster paced.
- The show suffers from several clichés and focuses on terribly-written episodes that have already been done in other kids' programs:
- Blue's Room Shorts: at the end of the sixth season of Blue's Clues.
- "Snacktime Playdate" was a rehash of a Blue’s Clues episode “Snack Time”.
- The characters are flanderized:
- Blue started out in Blue's Clues show were she only barks which makes her cute and lovable, she was flanderized into the annoying talking dog who only talks way too much nonstop, mainly due to Moona's fairy magic. This is far from the Blue we all know and love.
- Joe cries over losing his dragons in "Knights of the Snack Table". This makes him unlikable in the episode since what he even did isn't a big deal at all. He's also even more immature than he was in Seasons 5 and 6 of the original.
- This spin-off isn't that worth watching. It goes to show that this spin-off is hard to watch, easy to ignore, and just forgettable in general. Giving this spin-off any attention will make Nickelodeon think this is a good idea, which causes the Blue's Clues franchise to be milked to death until Blue's Clues & You! debuted.
- The show doesn't bring anything interesting to the episodes, with many episodes and or morals being overly predictable to the younger audiences.
- Almost all of the characters had unoriginal characterization, with many characters having similar personalities to those from kids shows. Blue's playmates (in Blue's Room) serve as substitutes for older and classic characters (including Steve), along with the reboot, and often interact exclusively with other characters their age:
- Roary the Dinosaur, (an orange dinosaur who likes to practice roaring) for some reason, only has one trait, which is roaring really loudly. His roars sound like Tarzan yelling and his voice is extremely annoying.
- Polka Dots (one of Blue's best friends and the co-host of the show). Like Roary and Blue (from Blue's Room), he is overly talkative and obnoxiously loud.
- Fred, one of Blue's other best friends, has a tendency to pretend that it's her birthday, even when it's not, which gets too repetitive fast. She also has a whiny, scratchy, and overall very irritating voice.
- Moona is a green and blue-colored fairy made of crescent shapes who appears at the end of each segment and episode. While she's tolerable, she can be annoying sometimes, since she usually does nothing other than saying "Time to go, Blue!"
- Handy Dandy Journal, whose song "Write it Down!" can be annoying, and he delays Blue's departure to see Joe in the Season 6 Blue's Room Shorts.
- Silly Seat is a chair who tells silly jokes, crazy riddles, and other funny things. He is a laughable sofa who does nothing but tell "knock-knock" and "what do you call?" jokes to make others laugh. Fortunately, he was dropped from the cast in the second season.
- Doodle Board is an easel who doodles and draws to tell the viewer to guess what the object is. He says "A Doodle, Doodle, Doodle" three times until he says "Guess", which can get very irritating.
- Boogie Woogie is a jukebox who is obsessed with singing and dancing, and nothing else.
- Sprinkles (introduced in Season 2) is Blue's baby brother who had no spots at first before gaining rainbow spots. He also lacks any flaws, which makes him a Gary Stu. He was the new host in the second season's premiere, Sprinkles is a somewhat shy spotted puppy.
- Unfitting soundtrack, including the theme song and credits music.
- Fred, Polka Dots, Sprinkles, and Roary are really annoying to listen to, especially Roary's roaring sound effect.
- Steve never appeared in the series (including "Meet Blue's Baby Brother"), which is disappointing to everyone who grew up with his episodes of Blue's Clues. It doesn't help that he headed out for college in "Steve Goes to College".
- This spin-off caused Blue's Clues to jump the shark, and was partly responsible for its decline in quality, as sometime after its debut, the Blue's Clues franchise almost died. It is barely worth watching and shouldn't be given that much attention. Giving this spin-off any attention will make Nickelodeon think this is a good idea.
- This segment caused Blue's Clues to focus less on older, more mature, classic, and reboot characters like Steve, Sidetable Drawer, Mailbox, Mr. Salt, Mrs. Pepper, Paprika, Cinnamon, Shovel, Pail, Slippery Soap, Tickety Tock, Magenta, Green Puppy, Periwinkle, Orange Kitten, Green Kitten, Purple Kangaroo, and The Felt Friends (Fifi, Freddy, Phaderus, etc.), and more on younger characters who relate to children in the 0-4 age range along with Blue's Clues Season 5-6 and Blue's Room characters such as Fred, Polka Dots, Sprinkles, Roary, Silly Seat, Doodle Board, Boogie Woogie, Sprinkles, Joe, and the aforementioned Blue (especially her Blue's Room counterpart).
- It was pretty much the reason why the Blue's Clues franchise almost died, as it went on an 11-year hiatus after the show's cancellation in 2007.
Good Qualities
- Good puppetry (depending on your view, the puppet designs are cute).
- Blue's backroom is pretty neat to look at.
- They encourage kids to use their imagination.
- There some good episodes.
- Decent voice acting from Victoria Pontecorvo, Jared Goldsmith, Christiana Anbri, Alex Hoffman and Brianna Gentiella.
- Some characters from the original series (besides Blue) appears in this spin-off as one time guests, and are still likable such as:
- Dictionary
- Key
- Moona
- The rest from here on out guest appeared in Season 2's "Meet Blue's Baby Brother":
- Mailbox
- The Shaker family:
- Mr. Salt
- Mrs. Pepper
- Paprika
- Cinnamon
- Shovel
- Pail
- Blue is still cute, despite being flanderized.
