Boat Smarts is a second part of the 4th episode from season five of SpongeBob SquarePants.

Plot

Mrs. Puff hosts a documentary about good and bad boaters starring Squidward and SpongeBob.

Qualities Without Boat Smarts

  1. Awful moral: If you are good at driving, you will get maimed for doing the right thing, and if you're bad at driving, you'll be just fine.
  2. It's basically first Richard Pursel's Squidward torture episode, only this time, it's a Squidward and Mrs. Puff torture episode, as Squidward gets harm through all of SpongeBob's actions while Mrs. Puff gets wrecked and puffs upright on Squidward.
  3. Many violent moments, such as Squidward getting crushed in a spiked steamroller.
  4. SpongeBob (although, at least still likable) is being a reckless driver for being ignorant to the people he is running over.
  5. Hypocrisy: The infamous quote: "Looks like you guys forgot your boat smarts!" said by SpongeBob, a terrible driver.
  6. Squidward is maimed and tortured for doing the right thing, while SpongeBob, doing the wrong things, goes through unscathed.
  7. SpongeBob faces absolutely no consequences for his actions.
  8. Plot-hole: Why was there a spiked steamroller in the road? Won't that destroy the road?
    • For some weird reason, the road didn't get destroyed by the spiked steamroller, which is impossible in real life.

Qualities With Boat Smarts

  1. A few funny moments here and there, such as the tire scene and the crash test scene.
    • The spiked steamroller joke may be funny.
  2. Some people may call this episode “so bad it’s good” since everyone is in character but the moral is not handled properly. Using SpongeBob as the bad example in the episode is the way to go, again just poorly handled.
  3. Mrs. Puff, Squidward, and the Bikini Bottomites are likeable.
  4. "Citizens Of Bikini Bottom United To Keep SpongeBob SquarePants Off The Road And Out Of Boats All Together" is proof that the episode is aware that SpongeBob is a horrible driver.
  5. Squidward may have been tortured for doing the right thing, but it's meant to show the consequences of not doing what the episode tells you to do (though it would've been a bajillion times better had SpongeBob gotten arrested for all these things).
  6. A 2011 Toyota commercial used clips from this episode and it gives people far better morals, which are:
    • Buckle up.
    • Drive the speed limit.
    • Never shave while driving.
    • Not to mention, season 13's "Yellow Pavement", which premiered 16 years after "Boat Smarts", despite it being average at best, can be seen as better than "Boat Smarts".
  7. It has an interesting concept of parodying educational instructional films.

Reception

  • This episode ranked number 10 on Mr. Enter's "Top 10 Worst Squidward Torture Porns."
  • IMDb rated this a 6/10 overall with its sister episodes.

Trivia

  • As mentioned above, clips from this episode were used in a 2011 Toyota commercial.
  • This episode later get an very average sequel "Yellow Pavement".
