Botched reboots

Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go!, a prime example of a bad reboot.

In recent years, it's become a common trend for old popular cartoons and live-action shows that were canceled long ago to get reboots to be made specifically for newcomers of the newer generations. Most of these reboots are either of very poor quality and/or tend to disappoint people.

Most of these reboots try way too hard to "modernize" the original shows, but it is done poorly to the point where they don't capture the charm of the show they're based on. In many cases, this is because the writers didn't understand what made the original shows popular.

While these reboots tend to be popular and aren't always bad, fans of the of original show almost always hate the reboots because they're too different, their poor quality, or both. Some classic cartoons, such as Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry, have had various reboots but none of them have been popular as the original. While they usually have some charm, none of them have been considered favorites by critics.

Not all reboots turn out to be worse than the original, though. Some reboots are way better received than the shows they were based on, and are very rare. An example of this is Johnny Test (2021), a reboot of the 2005 animated series of the same name.

How to make a good reboot

  1. Make them faithful to their original source material, while adding anything new to it.
  2. Hire a good set of writers, namely writers that are both fans of the original source material and understand the source material very well or writers from the original source material (unless they have passed away).
  3. Have actual effort and heart into it.
