Brawlhalla is a fighting game developed by Blue Mammoth Games and published by Ubisoft for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and PlayStation 4. It got a release on Nintendo Switch and Xbox One on November 2018 and iOS and Android on August 2020. Its main inspiration was from the famous fighting game series Super Smash Bros.

Good Qualities

  1. Smooth and fluent controls.
  2. Has a lot of characters, called Legends, that can be unlocked by playing and earning points.
  3. Unique concept of having the move set based on the weapon the has and the stats of each based on the Legend itself, each character having 2 weapons to use. If you can't get a weapon, your Legend's bare fists are also a great weapon.
  4. You can level up every Legend, unlocking something every time. For example, you can unlock a black alt costume.
  5. Supports local and online mode.
  6. Several modes: Free-for-All, where four players battle it out for points till the time runs out, 1v1 Strikeout, where the name explains it all: two players competing to the death against each other while using a new character every time they fall out of the stage, and Experimental 1v1, where two players battle it out with upcoming features that are not yet released.
  7. You can set up custom games: you can set to limited or unlimited time, or how many lives you want for the Legends. You can also set up online up to eight players.
  8. Every week, the roster changes, except for paid characters.
  9. Best of all, it's COMPLETELY free-to-play! No paywalls (minus skins and some guest characters), no pay-to-win, no pay-to-level up.
  10. In 2017, Dan Fornace (the creator of Rivals of Aether) made a bet with Blue Mammoth Games to see who can get 20,000 Twitter followers first and the loser has to feature a character from the winner's game as an unlockable guest fighter. Dan lost and featured Ragnir as an alternate skin for Maypul and as part of the bet. In return and being a good sport, Blue Mammoth featured Ranno as an alternate skin for Wu Shang.
  11. The game has spawned several crossover skins, most notably for Ben 10, Shovel Knight and the Rayman franchise, after the titular character became a purchasable guest fighter from Patch 3.32 onwards.

Bad Qualities

  1. In the game, playing passively is more rewarding than aggressively. This is because "Dodge" is far too good at resetting Neutral, no game resets you back to Square 1 faster than Brawlhalla's Dodge. You also have 3 jumps.
  2. "Spammers" are very rampant in this game, due to the effectiveness. "Sig-Spammers" are the most notable; using the Heavy-Attacks of certain characters, like Queen Nai or Orion. Their problems are Speed, Range or Attack.
  3. All Weapons are pretty annoying, added with their weird hitboxes; fighting them is obnoxious.(Axe, Hammer and Lance hit very hard, Bow and Blasters force you to wait, Spear and Greatsword have tons of range)
  4. Even with good internet, the game can lag and send you off-stage, making you lose unnecessary stocks and points because of it. (The 4 Bars of Brawl: 1-2 is teleportation, 3 is slowed fight-choreography, 4 is normal)
  5. During its' early days, it was infamous for having weird hitboxes and some glitches. However, they were fixed and replaced by other weird hitboxes.
  6. Xull, one of the Legends, is very overpowered as he's the only Legend with 9 strength, and considering his weapons are Axe and Cannon, they hit very hard. This is even more frustrating because of the liberation in movement (See #1). Now remember kids, you can just use Axe Dair to stack damage and Sair afterwards(The hard part)
  7. Some Legends are quite horrible due to their stats, Queen Nai is quite the most notable. You'd think with Katars and the Spear she'd be pretty fast? well no, she's the slowest character in the game, with 3 speed. Even with Speed-Stance she cannot keep up and will easily be beaten in high-ranks, as per every Mighty-Glacier. Her Sigs are also very safe and have stupidly good reach (Dsig and Nsig on spear), but again, if she misses, it's a free-combo. Her speed makes it so that she can't really escape anything.
  8. Scythe is the best weapon, and all their moves are too fast to counter, anyone who's bad at dodging will literally be screwed over, the only weakness of scythe is that it requires skill, but who needs skill when you can passively wait out their dodge. To give an example, Scythe-Dair will grab anyone below it, and the speed makes it abusable.
  9. Dexterity is quite horrible, while the idea of having fast attack-speed is quite nice (It's hard to explain), it doesn't help out that priority itself (on weapons) no matter the speed will always be interrupted, that's why low-Dex Characters are a cut above the rest. As an aside Volkov is a Axe and Scythe Legend with 8 dexterity, which is ridiculous.
