Brian Writes a Bestseller is the 6th episode of the 9th season of Family Guy. This episode guest stars Bill Maher, Dana Gould, and Arianna Huffington.
Plot
Feeling discouraged with the progress of his writing career, Brian decides to throw in the towel until Stewie become his manager and one of his books hits the bestseller list.
Why This "Bestseller" Flopped
- This is nothing more but a Stewie torture episode.
- Brian is at his absolute worst here (alongside "Brian's a Bad Father"), as he abuses Stewie for no apparent reason, which is child abuse since Stewie is an infant, and angrily glares at him and leaves him alone in the sidewalk, which leads to Stewie getting stabbed by a mugger at the end of the second act.
- He yells at Stewie for things that were not his fault such as eating in the back of a gourmet restaurant, a pill in his baloney, and being under an air vent because he assumed that Stewie betrayed him.
- He repeatedly cuts Stewie off when he tries to explain why he's under an air vent.
- Brian never got punished for what he did to Stewie.
- He also wanted to get a woman's phone number but when she says she's creeped out, Brian rudely says "Hey, congratulations. Somebody famous now hates you."
- Disregarding that, it was Stewie who inspired Brian to go back into writing.
- "I am done with you! do you hear?! done! get out of here now!"'
- The Real Time with Bill Maher segment is live-action, which feels out of place for an animated show. Animating the whole sequence would have made it better.
- This is even more jarring when you consider Family Guy's not on a tight budget like it claims to be.
- Horrible ending: After Brian gets kicked off Bill Maher's show, he doesn't even apologize to Stewie properly because he is too scared to admit that he was vile to him, showing that Brian is a coward that is too scared to apologize. What's worse is that Stewie didn't beat him up like in the iconic "Where's my money?!" scene since Stewie usually gives Brian what he deserves for his actions.
Redeeming Qualities
- The episode does has a good message of being humble when it comes to being famous, albeit very poorly.
- Brian did get his comeuppance at the end of the episode, as he gets kicked off Bill Maher's show. But it still didn't do justice for Stewie.
- In the end, after Brian fails to apologize, Stewie tells Brian "he can't write", which is actually true.
- Stewie is likeable in this episode.
- The Penguin Publishing scene is pretty funny.
- "Out, Get Out, Get Out Now!"
- "Whoa, that's alot of boxes"
Reception
The episode has a rating of 7/10 on IMDb. Some fans criticized the episode for Brian being a jerk to Stewie. PhantomStrider considered this to be the 3rd worst episode of the show.
