Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an American comedic police procedural sitcom created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur. It has received positive reviews from critics and has been favorably compared to The Office and Parks and Recreation.
Synopsis
The show follows the activities of the police officers of the 99th precinct and the various mishaps they get involved in.
Why It Rocks
- It is a very clever take on the police procedural, taking a more comedic route rather than the action-packed, high-stakes dramas in most police procedurals.
- The show's humor is very clever and witty, and draws a lot of parallels to Parks and Recreation
- A lot of likable and sympathetic characters.
- The show isn't afraid to go against norms and show police officers as humans capable of making mistakes and criticize several aspects of the policing system, and casts its protagonists in a more well-rounded and unique light compared to other police procedurals.
- The show's portrayal of LGBTQ+ and other minorities is very positive.
- Despite the more down-to-earth nature of the show, there are still a lot of intense and action packed moments.
- There are plenty of heartwarming and sad moments in addition to the funny moments.
- There are a lot of great episodes, and almost all of the episodes are fantastic.
Bad Qualities
- The show went somewhat downhill in its eighth and final season, since the George Floyd protests likely made the creators uncomfortable creating a police procedural, so they had to wrap it up quickly, though the finale is still great.
- Gina Linetti is a controversial character within the fandom, as some find her to be hilarious while others find her to be annoying and pretentious.
Reception
The series has received positive reviews from critics and fans, and has been favorably compared to other sitcoms like The Office and Parks and Recreation. Much like those other two shows, it has also spawned many memes.
