Brother Bear is an American animated comedy-drama film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released on November 1, 2003. It is the 44th animated feature film theatrically released by Disney.
Plot
Kenai (Joaquin Phoenix) is a young Indian brave with a particular distaste for bears. When his brother Sitka (D.B. Sweeney) is killed by one, Kenai in turn kills the bear, only to be magically transformed into one himself. To make matters worse, his other brother Denahi (Jason Raize) vows to kill the bear Kenai has become. Kenai's only hope is a magical mountain where he believes he can be changed back to a human, and he enlists a real bear cub, Koda, to get him there.
Good Qualities
- It has great vocal performances from the likes of Joaquin Phoenix (who would later star in Joker), Jason Raize and more.
- It has strong messages about brotherly love and the love to animals and the environment.
- It shows a ton of respect for the Inuit people and their entire culture.
- The animation in the film is really remarkable, capturing the look and feel of the forest landscape it is set in.
- The characters themselves are pretty likable, whether it be Sitka as the caring older brother or Rutt and Tuke as the Canadian moose who provide good comic relief.
- It is extremely clever, especially for a Disney film, for not having a villain and instead just having a big misunderstanding between two brothers.
- The film has plenty of funny moments, the most memorable being the scenes with Rutt and Tuke.
- The soundtrack is gorgeous, particularly with the song "Great Spirits" by Tina Turner and the "Transformation" song.
- There are plenty of moments that really get the audience to care about the characters, for example, Kenai bonding with Koda at the lake.
- The ending (where Kenai sacrifices himself to save Koda, prompting Sitka to appear and turn him back into a human. But upon realizing that Koda needs him because of his own mistake, Kenai asks Sitka to transform him back into a bear with Denahi's support. Sitka complies, and Kenai is transformed back into a bear. Koda is reunited briefly with the spirit of his mother, before she and Sitka return to the spirit world. In the end, Kenai lives with the rest of the bears and gains his title as a man, through being a bear) was very touching and happily emotional.
Bad Qualities
- Despite what's mentioned in WIR#5, Rutt and Tuke don't really do much to progress the plot.
- It has it's fair share of childish humor.
- Depending on your point of view, Kenai is unlikable.
