Buffer Bother is an episode from Thomas & Friends, it is the 19th episode of season six, and is overall the 149th episode of the Thomas & Friends series.
Plot
When Ben damages his buffers he's sent to the works to get them repaired, which makes Bill jealous and get into trouble.
Buffer Bother Qualities
- The primary issue with this episode is that it consists merely of four and a half minutes of Bill grumbling and bemoaning his lack of new buffers, especially when his twin, Ben, receives them.
- Continuity error: Following this episode, Ben returns to using his old buffers, rendering the episode's events seemingly inconsequential.
- Indeed, it's unfortunate because Bill and Ben do look splendid with golden buffers.
- Bill and Ben are both difficult to like; Ben boasts about his new buffers, while Bill is prone to bickering, complaining, and causing accidents.
- On that note, there's no reason for Bill to feel jealous about Ben receiving new buffers.
- The quarry set appears lackluster and uninviting, and the lighting in Season 6 does not enhance its appeal.
- When Bill accidentally damages his buffers, he ironically receives exactly what he desired. Despite being reprimanded by Sir Topham Hatt, it seems he hasn't learned his lesson.
- Like many other episodes from Season 6, Alec Baldwin's narration is very dull and lackluster. Additionally, he does not replicate his unique voices for Bill and Ben from the "Double Teething Troubles" episode in the previous season, which was notably entertaining for their resemblance to an irate Mickey Mouse.
- It unintentionally conveys a negative moral lesson that by being envious of others and persistently complaining, one will ultimately achieve their desires.
Good Qualities
- The Season 6 theme of Bill and Ben is well-composed and remains true to the spirit of the original theme.
- Mavis and Sir Topham Hatt are the only likeable characters and Ben is way more tolerable than Bill.
- Michael Angelis' narration is still really good.
- There are amusing incidents, like Bill sneezing out a pipe that becomes lodged in his funnel, and Bill blowing soot on Mavis, prompting her to exclaim, "BILL!"
- Despite the dull lighting the models are still well done.
- It conveys a decent moral lesson about accepting that you can't always get what you desire and avoiding envy towards others who obtain what you covet.
- The scene where Bill inadvertently reverses into the buffers and tumbles into a ditch is iconic.
Reception
Buffer Bother receive mixed-to-average reviews, although not as university panned and hated as "Middle Engine", it is regarded as one of the worst episodes of Season 6 by the fans as well as one of the worst episodes of the classic series due to its overall plot and basic premise, it was also given a negative review by Youtuber "Thomas1Edward2Henry3".
Trivia
- This is the first to not feature any of the engines of the main cast as well as the Skarloey Railway engines.
