Cabin Fever is a 2016 horror film, directed by Travis Z. It is a remake of Eli Roth's 2002 film of the same name. Roth returned here as executive producer and co-writer. The movie received a limited release.

Plot

After renting a cabin in the woods, a group of college graduates fall victim to a flesh-eating virus.

Why It Sucks

  1. It's a carbon-copy remake of the original film, except with different actors and slightly different dialog, making it very pointless.
  2. Because it's a carbon-copy remake, all the flaws from the first film are still present.
    • The plot is cliched.
    • All of the characters are annoying and unlikable.
  3. Terrible soundtrack, as the music is ill-fitting and excessively loud.
  4. Unlike the first movie, all the characters here are bland and unmemorable.
  5. Terrible acting. None of the actors show any real emotion, and as a result, none of the characters have any chemistry.
    • The "party" sheriff, one of the funny parts of the main film, is now a woman with no comedic timing whatsoever.
  6. While the first film was somewhat over-the-top and had some comedic scenes, this film takes itself way too seriously, and the few jokes they try to make fall completely flat.
  7. Lots of illogical and nonsensical scenes:
    • Although it's established (like in the original Cabin Fever) that there's no phone service at the cabin, for some reason, one of the characters is still able to post photos on the Internet (she says it just takes longer, but since there's a slight connection, realistically that would mean phone calls would still be able to go through).
    • At the end, there are shots posted on social media of various scenes in the film. This makes no sense, as the pictures are obviously screenshots from the film itself, and there's no evidence any of the characters had cameras in those scenes.
    • When one of the characters (with a gun) finds that one of his friends is infected, he decides to put her out of his misery. Instead of shooting her and making it quick, he beats her with a shovel, and when that fails, sets her on fire.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. At least the original script's excessive number of homophobic slurs aren't present.
  2. The new gore effects are still impressive.

Reception

The reception was universally negative, with criticism focusing on the poor acting and pointlessness of remaking a film that was just fourteen years old.
