Call of Duty: Black Ops II is a 2012 first-person shooter game published by Activision and developed by Treyarch.
Why It Rocks
- There are different endings, and each choice you make will determine what ending you get. The events of the player's ending is also determinant on the fates of Menendez, Lynch and Alex Mason, and whether the Strike Force missions were completed:
- If David/Section executes Menendez, Cordis Die supporters launch a massive worldwide revolution, resulting in global anarchy that results in the US President being assassinated, the disbanding of NATO and the eventual outbreak of a Third Cold War. This is the canonical ending and sets the background for Call of Duty: Black Ops III.
- If David/Section captures Menendez and Lynch survives, she will prevent Menendez's cyberattack and he will remain imprisoned, going berserk after seeing Lynch being interviewed on Jimmy Kimmel Live. This is the best possible ending of the game.
- If David/Section captures Menendez and Lynch was killed/not rescued (because of either Harper surviving, because if you spare Harper in the mission Achilles' Veil' Farid will die, and if Lynch was rescued in Colossus, and if Harper survived, she will be shot dead by Salazar, or be sliced in the throat by DeFalco if not rescued in Colossus and rescued in Second Chance), Menendez's cyberattack will succeed and he will break out of prison. After confronting and murdering Woods, Menendez commits suicide at his sister's grave by committing immolation.
- If Mason survives being shot by Woods (must be shot anywhere but the head), he will reunite with him and David/Section. Otherwise, David retires from the military after visiting his father's grave.
- If all the Strike Force missions were completed, China and the United States enter into an alliance, ending the Second Cold War.
- Just like with almost all the Call of Duty games, the graphics look amazing by 2012 standards. and the graphics are also a heavy improvement over Black Ops' and World at War's graphics, which were also games with great graphics too.
- The zombies mode is one of the best in the series right next to Black Ops III, and it's filled with great maps, most notably the map Mob of the Dead.
- Solid story about a JSOC team trying to hunt down Raul Menendez in a second Cold War in 2025 and the first Cold War in 1986.
- The Multiplayer is very fun and awesome to play, even in 2019 or 2020, the game was very active, in which, there was usually 20K+ players online and at some points, over 100K! Which is surprising, yet great to see in those years (despite some hackers nowadays, or modders, which are the players with a modded console).
- The weapon balancing is done pretty well, especially at launch. (Despite some balancing issues that ruined multiplayer games, such as the select fire FAL OSW).
- The voice acting is great, especially in zombies and by Alex and David Mason.
- It follows up well on the previous Black Ops game, something that follow-up game Call of Duty: Black Ops III executed poorly by having a weird choice in having it take place decades after this game’s campaign and using a whole new cast.
- Just like in The Operative: No One Lives Forever, Perfect Dark Zero, Original Hitman trilogy and Soldier of Fortune series you can choose your loadouts before each missions which adds further replay value.
- And speaking of replay value, there’s challenges in the campaign mode you can complete which also adds further replay value.
Bad Qualities
- Just like most of the campaigns in the series, the game’s campaign is short, in which that campaign clocks at 7 hours.
- Tranzit and Nuketown Zombies, while still decent zombies maps, are the weakest zombies maps in the game.
- Hackers are very rampant nowadays, thanks to modded consoles.
