Casper's Scare School is a French–American computer-animated series based on the computer-animated film of the same name featuring the Harvey Comics cartoon character Casper the Friendly Ghost. The series premiered in Canada on YTV on January 11, 2009, and then in France on TF1's TFOU block on April 1, 2009, and later in the United States on Cartoon Network on October 4, 2009.

A second season aired in 2012 with a new opening sequence, a new voice cast and a slightly different CGI animation style. 52 episodes were produced.

Plot

Casper has to be able to graduate through Scare School before he gets banished to the valley of the shadows forever. He goes on many adventures with the students that attend there.

Why This Season Rocks

  1. It's a huge improvement over the 2006 movie, which the series is based on.
  2. While most episodes are decent, some are very good, especially in Season 1 which even gave us the one-hour special "Power Outage", which has a fantastic plot and is considered to be the best episode of the series.
  3. The animation has also improved a lot compared to the movie, and even added several details to the CGI, such as the ghosts that now have a transparent and glowing effect in their designs. The animation was further improved in Season 2, which gave the characters unique cartoon-like movement and improved facial expressions.
  4. Most of the characters are likeable, including Casper himself, Mantha, Ra, Jimmy & Graham Bradley, Wolfie, Alder & Dash, Thurdigree Burns, Frankengymteacher, Quasi, Triclops, Pumpkinhead, Flyboy, Blodge, Kibosh, Slither, Mosshead, and Dummy Girl.
  5. In addition to Season 2 having improvised a lot in the animation, it also gave the episodes a better pace and a little more accelerated, as well as unique transition scenes and mainly a better writing of lines for the characters.
  6. The series also explores Scare School a lot and also the students besides the main trio Casper, Ra and Mantha, with most of them having great character development, such as Flyboy, who we found out was a human before becoming a creature after his father had an accident in his lab.
  7. The art style has slightly improved compared to the movie, although it still has a lot of quirks in some character designs.
  8. The backgrounds were also improvised, mainly Deedstown, the local town.
  9. Decent theme song.

Bad Qualities

  1. As said before, the design still looks kind of weird.
  2. Season 2 is considered inferior to this season due to its lack of continuity and generic storylines.
  3. Thatch and Norman can be unlikeable characters for some people.
  4. The humor is very mediocre, as Season 1 features weird jokes, usually because of the characters' lines and slow pace, and sometimes even disgusting, like the end of "Scare Day" which shows Thatch passing out while preparing a brain stew, while Season 2 has just a generic, bland humor.

Trivia

  • The series had an official website available at the time it was aired, however after 2014 the website remained inaccessible, absolutely nothing is known about what the website looked like as there are no screenshots or videos taken from it. It also cannot be seen through the Wayback Machine as it needs Flash to be able to see it.
