Castle Crashers is an indie beat-em-up co-op game, developed by The Behemoth, for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

It combines RPG elements with a beat-em-up, and features music created by users from Newgrounds.

On June 15, 2015, The Behemoth announced a remastered version, called Castle Crashers Remastered, in which they added to the game HD graphics, better frame rate, some performance improvements, and an additional mini-game. It was released for the Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

Plot

A dark wizard steals a giant mystical gem, and captures four princesses. It's up to the Knights to defeat this mysterious wizard and rescue the princesses.

Why It's A Castle Crasher

  1. All the Knights are unique, with different weapons and different magic abilities.
  2. Unlockable characters, each one with their own weapon.
  3. The Industrialist and The Fencer; not only they are easy to unlock (if you finish the game as Blue Knight), but they are the best characters in the game, by being Rank SS and two of the best boss slayers.
  4. Amazing and catchy soundtrack.
  5. The graphics is cute and amazing and reminiscing to the comic book styles.
  6. The bosses are unique and challenging, and they all have their own unique attacks.
  7. Great and/or silly weapons, which can be unlocked once you get them.
  8. If you're playing in co-op mode, and you rescue a princess, you'll get an awesome fight to the death for, who will get the kiss from the princess. This applies for even after rescuing the final princess.
  9. Funny and silly ending.
  10. If you bought BattleBlock Theater on your Steam profile, you'll get Hatty Hattington as a selectable character. In the Xbox One version, you can purchase him in the Insane Store instead.
  11. You can unlock Alien Hominid (The Behemoth's first console game) and play with him.
  12. Companions, which are called Animal Orbs, that can help you with their abilities.
  13. For the most part a well ballance difficulty, not too easy and not too hard.
  14. Insane mode, a mode which allows you to replay the entire game, it's exactly like Hard mode, but more enemies and having a stronger enemies to fight.
  15. During the final level, you can grind experience and money by fighting The Painter over and over.
  16. Nice movie references, such as Cyclops giving a thumb when going down in the lava after falling inside.
  17. In the remastered version, Pink Knight and the Blacksmith are playable characters.
  18. There's an item called Mighty Sandwich, which can make you beefy and able to damage enemies without worrying about knockback.
  19. Back Off Barbarian, an alternative mode if you are tired of playing the main campaign over and over.

Bad Qualities

  1. Some characters like Animal Orbs and weapons are pretty bad. For example:
    • Hatty Harrington and Blacksmith, despite being DLC Character, are the worst character that you would use, due to their bad splash damage (Hatty Harrington even dies before doing splash damage to enemies).
    • Alien Hominid, despite having a splash magic that has infinite range, it barely damages any boss/beefy enemies. It doesn't help that he can only equip the Alien Gun.
    • While the King has the ability to heal players, he's nearly useless on single player, since his splash magic does zero damage.
    • The Golden Whale spawns 1 gold every 30 seconds. That's basically it.
    • The Stove Face is considered to be one of the weakest characters in the game (According to the Castle Crashers Wiki, only 7 points, which makes him a rank D character), which makes it infuriating if you were expecting him to be as broken as his enemy counterparts upon unlocking him.
    • Pelter and Dragonhead, despite being purchasable at the Insane Store, are pretty bad.
    • Sherbert is nearly useless, as the only thing that improves is jumping, which is not useful for juggling.
  2. Three characters (Hatty Hattington, Blacksmith and Pink Knight) are only unlockable by DLC on PC, but as mentioned above, Hatty Hattington can be obtained by purchasing BattleBlock Theater on Steam.
  3. The Corn Boss and The Frost King are the most annoying bosses you will fight.
  4. Somewhat harsh difficulty spikes here and there, especially for the infamous level: Full Moon.
  5. While the Necromancer's boss fight is amazing, you will constantly use potions or die due to the wave of enemies that he will resurrect before fighting him.
  6. During Back Off Barbarian, the controls won't make you move in the direction you pressed, but on a square that has the arrow pointing to where you should go, making this confusing during the first play.

Reception

Castle Crashers recieved favorable positive reviews on all platforms. GameRankings rated the Xbox 360 version with a score of 82% and 88% for the PlayStation 3 version, and Metacritic holds a score of 82/100 for the Xbox 360 version, and a 85/100 score for the PlayStation 3 version. It has a score of 7.8 on Metacritic for the PC version.

It was also a commercial success, with 2.6 million copies sold on the Xbox 360, and 181,000 copies sold on the PlayStation 3 version.
