Chaos Faction 2 is a fighting Flash game developed and released by EON on April 7, 2010. It is the sequel to the 2006 Flash game Chaos Faction.
Why It's More Chaotic In a Good Way
- The graphics are great for 2010 standards. Each background is very well designed, and the characters' designs is very great too. Sometimes they make some characters more expressive, and it works well thanks to the great graphics.
- Amazing soundtrack that is completely original and does not borrow any themes from someone else. Many themes in the game match their stage' design and atmosphere. The final fight against Hypergon has an awesome theme that trurly sounds like you are about to defeat him and finish the game.
- The controls are very responsive, without any chances of the game failing to register your input. They also have a good choice, where pressing Z makes you punch, while the X key makes you kick. The controls are also configurable in options.
- Unlike the first game, you can play this game with 2 players, which can be great if you want to make a friendly match with your friend, or make a match where you and the other player fights against some CPUs.
- A very great choice of weapons to choice from, with them being either projectiles, explosives, among others. Some can be useful to trick your enemies, such as decoy crates or mines, or simply make your opponents fail to approach, especially with OHKO moves such as dark energy or homing missile (although the former is blockable, while the other one is not unless you press the X key).
- Compared to its predecessor, Chaos Faction 2 features full voice acting, and said voice acting is very great. Notably, each character has a fitting voice, and instead of recycling the characters' original voices, the developer decided to give them some voices other character have, such as Alien Hominid (named as simply Hominid in the game) having Zack's voice. Even Vortigon, the antagonist in the original Chaos Faction and apparently the antagonist in this game as Hypergon, received a voice instead of using simply generic sounds when the characters jump and fall down into oblivion.
- Great design of stages, with each having an unique hazard. Some stages, such as Technichaos, have more stage hazards. Some stages even look like a regular platformer, notably Lava Palaver. You can even disable the hazards to make the fight hazardless, and Chaos Tower has something interesting about that; it will be changed into its look when you fight Hypergon in the campaign mode, gaining a Super Smash Bros. Battlefield-like design.
- The game features achievements, which are a very nice touch. They range from finishing a match with required time limit, play some deathmatches, survive some rounds, among other achievements. Unlocking the achivements will unlock various stuff, such as weapons, hats, characters, and some deathmatch settings.
- Some of the characters from various Newgrounds game, such as Alien Hominid and Dad 'n me, appear in the game as unlockable characters, which is very nice, as it can introduce players to their games and see how their actual games are like, with Hominid's game being a run and gun one while Dad 'n me's game being a beat-em-up. Not to mention, three of the characters from the previous Chaos Faction, Gorilli, Mechalo and Vortigon return as unlockable characters, which itself is a great idea to bring back the previous characters, not to mention that Gorilli and Mechalo are more expressive compared to the previous game.
- The rage ability is very neat, as it allows you to unleash a powerful move that OHKOs the opponent no matter how much HP they currently have. They look even more fun when playing in two unlockable deathmatch options - 2x damage or 5x damage, which the latter can make it look like they have been thrown into space when you perform your rage uppercut. They are also randomized, so if you perform a rage ability, you cannot choose which one you want to perform, instead, you have to guess which type of rage ability the game decided to choose for you to perform.
Bad Qualities
- Similar to its predecessor, you can only play on one stage in the survival mode, with it being Town Tussle. Additionally, it no longer plays random stage music when it loads.
- Unfortunately, due to the discontinuation of Adobe Flash Player on January 12, 2021, the game became unplayable without any different ways to play it, but it can be played on different programs and/or browsers to work fully as intended.
- While the game works fine on Ruffle, it completely breaks when you quit/restart the match, being stuck on the image of the previous match before pausing.
- While the A.I. is overall very good, there are some moments where it can perform some strange things.
- After placing a decoy crate when they're either on the left or right sides of the stage and you're on the opposite side, they'll ignore the crate and walk into it, causing them to self-destruct due to it being an OHKO move.
- They sometimes perform their rage abilities near the edge, meaning that if they perform the rage ability that kicks you, they can sometimes fall down into the pit without any way of escaping.
- They shield too late when you use some items, especially the ones that have a very long range, allowing you to get a very easy K.O. if you wait before they stop shielding. Sometimes they don't even shield them at all.
Trivia
- When the game was published on Newgrounds on May 7, 2010, the game was quickly featured on the front page.
