Chicken Run is a platform-stealth game based on the 2000 animated film of the same name. It was released for the PlayStation, Dreamcast, Game Boy Color and PC in 2000.
Why It Rocks
- It is faithful to the original animated Aardman feature-length film where the player explores around the farm to gather things needed for escape plans.
- Out of the original voice cast from the film, Benjamin Whitrow and Lynn Ferguson reprise their roles respectively as Fowler and Mac.
- On that topic, the replacement actors for the other characters sound very similar to the original actors.
- It uses stealth elements in a similar fashion to Metal Gear Solid, i.e. a radar at the bottom left corner of the screen where the player will have to avoid guard dogs and the Tweedys themselves and staying away from light sources and noisy surfaces.
- It has FMV cutscenes from the animated film which one of them in order will play after the player completed the act along with the boss levels.
- Not only do you play as Ginger, but you can play as Rocky, Nick and Fetcher in different parts of the game.
- Rocky can be played in Act 2 to gather things around the farm. In addition, he can push heavy objects in order to get to hard-to-reach items.
- Nick and Fetcher can be played in Act 3 where they will be used for problem solving as the player will switch to either one of them.
- The soundtrack in the game is splendid as it keeps with the style of the original film and fits with the time of day and the minigames.
- Depending on how many chickens the player saves in any minigame or how fast the player finishes the task, the player is awarded with either a bronze, silver or gold medal by Fowler.
Bad Qualities
- When you are caught by either one of the guard dogs, Mr. Tweedy or Mrs. Tweedy can be disturbing when they glare at you in a menacing manner.
- The graphics are showing some of its age.
- Some of the dialogue when interacting with the characters can be cheesy.
- The Game Boy Color version is terrible.
Reception
The PlayStation version received generally favourable reviews whilst the Dreamcast and PC versions received mixed or average reviews.
