Chronicles of the Sword is a two-disc adventure epic game developed by Synthetic Dimensions. Based on Arthurian legends, it was released on the MS-DOS and PlayStation in 1996.

Why It Sucks

  1. A very bare bones plot that doesn't do much to flesh out or make sense in the slightest. It doesn't feel like it's following the legends of King Arthur.
  2. Much of the gameplay merely consists of your character, Gawain, going all over the place to find items and trade them to people. This becomes annoying with the point stated next.
  3. In doing this, you must know at least a few things about them in order to ensure that progress is being made. Unfortunately, all your inventory shows is a 3D image of the item and that's it! It gets nasty at some points; for example, you acquire at one point a broken clay pot that must be given to a monk who makes perfume because it has ambergris on it. However, since there's no mention of it until you give it to the monk, you wouldn't know why the pot is important in the first place!
  4. Speaking of your inventory, at least on the PS1 version, viewing certain items causes the game to crash for no apparent reason.
  5. Laughably bad battle system that, for some reason, is in a full motion video style. And guess what? The game is so badly programmed that the video and loading aren't properly timed! Chances are you'll end up dying a lot.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Selecting "Easy" allows the battle system to turn the videos into cutscenes, sparing you some trouble.
  2. Awesome cover art. It could be used as a movie poster without skipping a beat.
