Chuck E. Cheese's Sports Games is a sports video game developed and published by UFO Interactive (under the UFO Play brand). Released for the Wii in 2011, this features a variety of sports starring Charles "Entertainment" Cheese, Helen Henny, Mr. Munch, Pasqually the Chef and Jasper "Tennesse" Jowls.

Introduction

In Chuck E. Cheese's Sports Games, you can play as 5 different characters. You can play as Chuck, Helen, Jasper, Pasqually or Mr. Munch. Mr. Munch is the only character in the game not playable from the start of the game. To play as Mr. Munch, you need to unlock him.

Controls

In Chuck E. Cheese's Sports Games you use a Nintendo Wii Remote to control your character. You can also choose to make your character left or right handed.

Game Design

Chuck E. Cheese's Sports Games uses 3-D models of the Avenger era Chuck E. Cheese designs. These models are of questionable quality and can clip in-and-out of other models in game modes like golf.

Save Files

You can make 3 different save files in Chuck E. Cheese's Sports Games. You can even give the save files names. Each save file also has its own border which can be for tennis, baseball, or bowling. There is a trash can that you can use to delete save files.

Game Modes

Chuck E. Cheese's Sports Games has 9 playable game modes. These are baseball, tennis, ice hockey, golf, bowling, fishing, kart racing, water filling and target practice. Target practice requires you to get gold medals in the 8 other game modes before you can unlock it.

Baseball

In baseball, you hit baseballs in a timed high-score minigame. The goal of the game is to get the highest score before the time runs out. The farther you hit the ball the more points you get. You also get more points if you have a combo. If you keep hitting the baseballs in a row you'll get a combo, however if you miss a ball you get a strike which wastes some of your time. This minigame lasts for 90 seconds.

Tennis

In tennis, you hit tennis balls in a high-score minigame. The goal of the game is to get the highest score before you use all five of your tennis balls. You want to hit your tennis balls back and fourth against the wall for as long as you can. If you don't hit your ball or it goes past the wall you lose a tennis ball. When you lose all of your tennis balls the game ends. There is also a target that appears sometimes, and if your ball hits it you get bonus points.

Ice Hockey

In ice hockey, you hit pucks into a goal in a high-score minigame. The goal of the game is to get the highest score you can by timing 10 shots. You want to swing when the moving bar is in the orange to get a goal. The closer you swing to the red bar in the middle of the orange bar the more points you get. If you don't swing in the orange bar then you miss the shot and get 0 points. You only get 10 shots before the minigame ends.

Golf (A.K.A. Mini Golf)

In golf, you hit golf balls into a hole in as many hits as you can. The goal of the game is to end the game with the lowest amount of points. The more times you hit the ball the more points you get. The bar at the bottom of the screen shows you how much power you put into your swing. The more red the bar gets the more powerful the hit is. You can also rotate to angle your shots. There are 9 holes in total.

Bowling

In bowling, you roll a bowling ball down a lane to knock down as many pins as you can. The goal of the game is to end the game with the most amount of points in 10 rounds. You can move your character left and right to roll the ball down any part of the lane. When you roll the ball it will start to curve as is goes down the lane. The farther you are from the middle the more the ball curves. If you're on the left side of the lane the ball turns to the left and if you're on the right side of the lane the ball turns to the right. If you get a strike or a spare you get extra points, and if you hit a strike or a spare on round 10 you can get a third turn.

Fishing

In fishing, you fish up fish in a timed high-score minigame. The goal of the game is to get the highest score before the time runs out. The more fish you catch the more points you get. To catch a fish you must lower your rod when the fish's mouth is open. There are 5 different fish to catch. If you catch the correctly colored fish while they appear next to the timer you get bonus points. If you miss a fish's mouth then you have to reel your rod back up, wasting your time. This minigame lasts for 90 seconds.

Kart Racing

In kart racing, you go around a track for three laps in a timed match. The goal of the game is to get the highest score after three laps. There are two types of boxes that you can collect to help you. Yellow boxes give you points while blue boxes give you a speed boost. You want to get as many yellow and blue boxes as you can while also trying to complete the laps as fast as you can. You also get a time bonus for how fast you complete the race.

Water Filling

In water filling, you fill up a hole with water in a timed high-score minigame. The goal of the game is to get to the end as fast as you can. You want to shoot your water into the hole to make your character move while also making sure to let your water reload. You can tell how much water you can shoot by the blue bar. The more blue the bar is the more water you have. The more water you get in the farther your character moves along. The faster your character makes it to the end the more points you get. There is also a CPU that plays but they don't effect your final score. If you spray water at your character or the CPU it causes them to spin out. They can't move while spinning out so don't shoot yourself. This minigame lasts for 90 seconds.

Target Practice

In target practice, you shoot down targets in a timed high-score minigame. The goal of the game is to get the most amount of points before the time ends. Targets can give points, double the amount of points given from the next target, reverse the direction the darts move, or give extra darts. You can have up to six darts at a time. When you run out of darts you have to wait to reload them. This game can only be accessed after getting gold medals in all of the other 8 games. This minigame lasts for 90 seconds.

Why It Isn't the Place to Be a Kid

Overall

  1. The game itself feels like it's trying to rip off Wii Sports. Both are sports games that have a variety of sports and they all contain the same sports each, which are baseball, tennis, golf and bowling. Even if the latter game has different sports compared to the former (like Kart Racing and Water Filling).
  2. The game's sole purpose is to advertise Chuck E. Cheese's, which makes it more of an advertisement than a game.
  3. Boring, repetitive games that get worse as you play them over and over again. They only get harder as the player progresses and feel more luck-based than skill-based.
  4. There are only nine sports, three of which are actually carnival games, which is not enough for a sports/party game.
    • The water filling segment involves you making your character go forward just by filling a hole with water. Just because it features cut-outs of the Chuck E. Cheese characters on water skis does not mean that it's a sport, since you're only using water to fill up a hole.
  5. False advertising and idiotic moves:
    • On the character select screen, you will first notice that Mr. Munch is an unlockable character, but the front cover and in the title screen have him already present.
    • Helen Henny's first Avenger design (1999-2012) is used on the front cover, is sometimes featured in the background (for example, there's a portrait featuring her with this design in the Water Filling game) and her head is used as a sprite, but her model in the actual game uses her second Avenger design (2007-2013) instead.
  6. Lack of content, as it's basically just sports games. That's all it is.
  7. Little to no voice acting at all.
  8. The game can either be beaten in less than two hours or take up to a whopping four hours to complete.
  9. Laughably weird character animations.
  10. Lack of features like game modes and alternate ways to play (e.g. a Tournament Mode).
  11. Boring multiplayer mode.
  12. It is riddled with bugs and glitches.
  13. Lack of other features and extras, which makes it feel more like an unfinished game or tech demo.
  14. Mediocre character roster, which is made even worse by the fact that the game was never touched upon, with a lack of patches/updates and non-existent support from day one, making the game age poorly as a result.
  15. Overpriced: There is too little content for a full game that costs $33.
  16. Unlike many sports games from the past, there are no new mechanics or creative gimmicks to spice up each sport, thus making the game obsolete by default; all of them play out almost (though not quite) like the regular versions of their respective sports in real life, which is unacceptable.
    • Many sports games are known for using gimmicks, mechanics and features from many other games in the franchises they're related to so the gameplay is more fun and enjoyable (the Mario Strikers series, for example, has a different version of Soccer that is portrayed as crazier and more frantic, with the typical rules of soccer being ignored and regular items from the Mario Kart series being used as well).
    • Heck, the Mario & Sonic games have Dream Events, fantasy-like versions of regular Olympic events with M&S elements implemented onto to them, which is the reason why they were beloved by many Mario fans alike; CECSG doesn't have that and instead plays things safe. The only remotely unique gimmick is the target in the Tennis segment, and even then, it still feels lifeless and boring.
  17. The graphics look terrible for a Wii game released in 2011, as they look akin to an early Dreamcast, PS2, GC, Xbox, GBA or DS game (1998-2007) rather than a title released on the Wii. This is unacceptable, since Super Mario Sunshine was released for the GameCube and it actually looks better by a long mile; that game was released back in 2002, eight years before this game, which just makes it look pale in comparison to other Wii games in terms of overall presentation. Also, the characters look like clay, with Jasper being the worst offender of this due to his eyes.
  18. The camera is useless and atrocious.
  19. The Baseball game seems to play almost exactly like the infamous Backyard Sports: Baseball 2007, with a few exceptions here and there.

Mini Golf

  1. Very poor implementation of motion controls, much like a lot of other third-party games on the Wii. Similar to Wii Sports Golf and Mario Golf, in order to swing, you have to swing the Wii Remote forward. However, unlike in this game, the motion controls in the two aforementioned games actually work and are responsive.
  2. Bland courses with them being very empty and lacking any sort of obstacles, making them cookie-cutter.
  3. Wonky and extremely off-ball physics, and due to the cookie-cutter designs and terrible controls, the physics make Mini Golf even more of a chore to complete.

Baseball

  1. Awful and bizarre hit detections that make some of the baseballs an absolute nightmare to hit.
  2. All you do is swing, hit, swing, hit, swing, hit, swing, hit... and nothing else. That's all it is; swinging your bat and hitting as many randomly launched baseballs as you can for a high score. There is no strategy whatsoever, making Baseball incredibly repetitive and primitive.

Kart Racing

  1. The game can easily get boring, as you only have to get points and boost.
  2. It is clearly a Mario Kart rip-off; you can tell that it is one, as it contains item boxes like MK, albeit with you collecting points or going faster.
  3. It's more about time trials than actual racing (except in Multiplayer Mode, where players race against each other).

Bowling

  1. The physics are unrealistic and way too generous towards the player. You can easily get a strike every time you play a game of bowling by just hitting one of the front pins. Wii Sports does have simple gameplay, but at least the physics are more realistic.

Mr. Munch's Target Practice

  1. The game is near-impossible to unlock, as the player is required to unlock Mr. Munch in order to unlock and play this.
    • To add insult to injury, this is the only reward granted to the players once eight of the nine sports have been completed. No modes unlocked, no levels unlocked, nothing else.
  2. It's a rehash of the eponymous game from Chuck E. Cheese Party Games, just with a different design.

Ice Hockey

  1. The goal is to score random points by hitting ten shots into a goal, swinging when the moving bar is in the orange. Though scores in video games are nothing new, the score system in Ice Hockey is far less subtle and on-the-nose. To make matters worse, the player has a 99% chance of actually shooting the puck into Jasper (the opponent)'s net.
  2. Luck-based gameplay: this game relies entirely on random luck because the outcome of goals you make and/or your points is random, meaning the result is largely determined by chance rather than skill. This not only means that whether you'll win or not is entirely dependent on luck, but it leads to a lack of self-control.
  3. No reward or replay value, as per usual with all the other sports.

Fishing

  1. Much like Ice Hockey, it's completely luck-based.

The Only Redeeming Quality

  1. The soundtrack is nice. Some of the songs are pretty awesome too, as they fit the easy-going tone of the game.

Reception

Chuck E. Cheese's Sports Games was panned by both Chuck E. Cheese fans and players alike and is considered not only one of the worst Wii games ever made, but one of the worst things to come out of the Chuck E. Cheese franchise as a whole. The game was also immeditately forgotten upon release to the point where only 13 users rated the game on Amazon, and deemed a commercial failure.
