Cover Up (The Powerpuff Girls, 1998) is the second half of the 11th episode in the second season of The Powerpuff Girls (1998).

Summary

Buttercup becomes attached to a green blanket that makes her a good fighter, that she says to herself when she's alone, and Blossom and Bubbles tease her for it.

Torturous Qualities

  1. Blossom and Bubbles are mean-spirited and selfish in this episode and towards Buttercup as they tease her for keeping a blanket to keep her fighting instead of appreciating her for it.
  2. Blossom and Bubbles don't help Buttercup when she's being beaten up by a monster. They're her sisters and they're supposed to defend and aid her.
  3. Blossom goes back to the Utonium household and gets a fake green blanket to help her win the fight against the monster, showing she deceived Buttercup into thinking it's the real blanket.
  4. Plot Hole:: While it was explained that Buttercup’s blanket went missing because Professor Utonium was busy washing it, one of the rooms Buttercup went to look for her blanket in a panic was the laundry room yet she didn’t find it there. She also did not apparently bother to look in the washer and dryer to see if it was there too.
    • As the professor knew where Buttercup’s blanket was all along, Buttercup never even thinks about asking the professor where her blanket was and what happened to it. The professor also fails to tell Buttercup that he was taking the blanket to wash it earlier. Had he done that, Buttercup would not have thrown the tantrum seen earlier in the episode.
    • Blosson also revealed that the blanket she got Buttercup was fake yet it was never revealed how it is fake and it is not shown where Blossom got the fake blanket.
  5. Bad ending: When Buttercup sees her blanket in the basket where the Professor did the girls' laundry and rushes over to retrieve it, Blossom and Bubbles give angry glares at Buttercup and force her to give up her blanket to the Professor which is just a punch in the gut.
    • This also counts as hypocrisy as Bubbles has Octi as an emotional crutch of her own and she's allowed to keep it while Buttercup can't keep her blanket.
  6. Blossom and Bubbles show absolutely no remorse for their mistreatment for Buttercup and get off scot-free.

Covered Qualities

  1. Buttercup is still a great character in this episode, as it's okay for someone to have an emotional crutch and feel great about it. But it’s demolished once you remember BQ#4.
  2. The scenes with Buttercup and her blanket are cute, charming, and heartwarming, since they show that Buttercup has a soft side.

Trivia

  • Buttercup's "No!" became a famous meme.
