Craig of the Creek is an American animated television series that premiered on March 30 2018 on Cartoon Network. It is created by Matt Burnett and Ben Levin, who had previously served as story editors/writers on Steven Universe, as well as former writers of Level Up. The show's pilot episode debuted on the official app and online on December 1, 2017. The series premiered online on February 19, with a double-premiere event aired on Cartoon Network on March 30, 2018.

Plot

The show follows a young boy named Craig, his two friends Kelsey and J.P., and their many adventures in the titular creek, described as a kid utopia of untamed wilderness in which tribes of children reign over tree forts and dirt bike ramps.

Why It Rules the Creek

1. It is highly imaginative.
2. The concept is empowering to kids in a Codename: Kids Next Door way.
3. Smooth animation which is similar to Steven Universe.
4. Decent character designs.
5. The theme song is awesome.
6. Craig, Kelsey, and J.P. are all very good characters that work off each other well.
7. This is the first Cartoon Network show to have an African-American as the main character.
8. Not only is Craig African-American, the characters are very diverse, a background character is an Islamic girl, the Sewer Queen is Filipina, Stacks and Wildernessa are Latinas respectively, and Kelsey is of Hungarian descent. Not only the characters are diverse, the show that Jessica watches, “Ms. Honey Kim and Small Uncle Show” appears to be a Korean show.
9. Kelsey's internal monologues are dramatic yet funny.
10. Some good lessons such as "sometimes we all need a little space".
11. It's like Legends of Chamberlain Heights, but a done right version for kids!
12. Kelsey's pet Parakeet, Mortimer is adorable.
13. Good use of ironic humor, the "Elders of the Creek" are actually nerdy teen larpers.
14. Beautiful and detailed background artwork that builds a warm atmosphere that's generally difficult to pull off.
15. Great voice acting, especially from Craig's family such as his dad voiced by Terry Crews, and his older brother Bernard voiced by Phil LaMarr.
16. The show also covers serious topics like religious cults and dictatorship, such as Bridgette’s arc being about worshipping a dog then her and the King is more like a dictator than a king since he wants to take over the other side of the creek.
17. The season three finale episodes,“Capture the Flag”, is a very epic arc with the entire creek kids coming together to stop King Xavier and his forces from taking over their side of the creek.

Bad Qualities

1. J.P could be seen as a red-neck sterotype.
2. Some episodes included dead memes like "Salt Bae", "Get Rekt", and "The ground is lava".
3. Various kids can take playtime too far and act as if they live in their own imaginary world and not the real world, even when they’re in a situation where they have to go back in reality.
4. It can be viewed as paracosm and in some cases, schizophrenic, which can be unhealthy at times.
   • Kelsey claiming she’s a warrior and her father feeding into this into fantasy by talking to her like she’s medieval knight rather than a normal child, even in serious situations, like punishment and giving her responsibilities, he could’ve talked to her like normal instead of changing his language.
   • The Horse Girls live under the persona of horses, even if they’re in perils situations, like sinking in quick sand, they can’t leave the horse persona just to save themselves, it’s very pathetic.
   • Sparkle Cadet and Deltron, live under the persona of an alien and a cyborg from the future respectively, but it looks like these personas are a form of escapism and people from the present won’t be affected by seeing Deltron. While it’s fun to watch, it can be viewed as an unhealthy practice in some cases.
5. Some unfunny gross out/toilet jokes.
6. There are unnecessarily detailed gross closeups in a few episodes that are horrifying and disgusting, examples are a closeup of Craig’s infected eye when he got pink eye, JP with live action lips, Kelsey with bulging muscles and JP’s neck growing long after they drink hot chocolate.
7. The episode Alone Quest (The only bad episode in the series and a bad way to end season 1.) is a pretty weak episode, due to the overuse of toilet humor and poop jokes.

Trivia

In the episode "The Kid From 3030" has Craig and his friends encounter a boy (voiced by Del the funky homosapien) who states and believes that his name is Deltron and that he is from the year 3030. He wears a cassette player on his chest that reads "Automator".(a reference to his hip hop froup deltron 3030) The third-season episode "Capture the Flag Part 5: The Game" features the track "Positive Contact".
