Synopsis

Set in the city of Kasukabe of Saitama Prefecture within the Greater Tokyo Area of Japan, the series follows the adventures of the five-year-old Shinnosuke "Shin" Nohara and his parents, baby sister, dog, neighbours, and best friends. Most of the plot is about Shin-chan's daily life, but it is also often interspersed with a lot of fantastic and incredible elements.

Why It's A Superstar

  1. Being an anime series created in the 1990's, it is widely considered as one of the longest-running anime in history, even to the point where the series aired over 1,000 episodes, on par with Doraemon.
  2. Amazing characters designs that are appealing, especially Shinnosuke himself. Some of the characters also had cute designs by the way.
  3. Really good animation by Shin-Ei Animation, even for a 1990's anime as it had little to no animation errors (at least in the later seasons), and the animation got even better in later episodes, thanks to being improved with better colors and more details.
  4. The art style is also unique, and looks great, even when compared to other Japanese shows like Doraemon, and it is simply iconic because most people who saw a character from this show will immediately recgonize this show.
    • The art style was also even more improved since now it is more detailed and is more colorful, and it looks somewhat impressive with such a simplistic art style.
  5. A great cast of characters that are either likable or fairly funny Characters, some examples would include:
    • Shinnosuke Nohara himself is a very likable character, as he is only five years old and tries to understand the world around him, and despite that, he can still be very funny with his troubles, despite some of his funny moments being inappropriate.
    • Misae Nohara is Shinnosuke's mother, and while she can be rather unlikable at times due to yelling at and hitting Shin-Chan, she is still a decent character who tries hard to not let Shin-Chan causing troubles and also care for her family.
    • Nene Sakurada is a good friend to Shin-Chan and also had ton of funny moments as well, she also a friendly character, especially toward Shin-Chan.
  6. Fun soundtrack that countain a lot of catchy musics to listen to and the soundtrack fit the series itself, also it is even be hilarous to listen to at times, making this even better.
  7. Great voice acting, especially in the Japanese version as all of the voices fit the characters, and most of the dubs also had good voice acting, such as the American and French dub.
  8. This show is notorious for having a ton of great humor, and it is true since this show is probably one of the funniest shows you could ever watch, especially if you like dark comedy.
    • The funny moments mostly come from Shin-Chan himself, as he does say a lot of jokes that are either dark or mean in a hilarious way (such as saying in one episode that he liked when his mom was fatter, which is a bit mean but funny to some), or some of the troubles that he cause.
    • This is also one of the few kids' shows where inappropriate moments can be funny, however some of them are still bad and way too forced.
      • For exemple, the running gag of Shinnosuke butt can be funny to some, since it can make up for a lot of comedy despite being very innapropriate.
    • Even some of the moments where Shin-Chan compliment someone are funny, especially because of the fact that he is 5 years old and that he do it with the like of an adult, howewer it can be creepy at times because most of the time he does it but most of them are grow up womans and he sometime even ask sexual relation, which is also innapropriate for a kid show.
  9. Despite that most of the dubs are censored, there's a lot of them that are still just as funny if not great such as the French dub where it still had the charm of the original Japanese version because of having ton of funny adult jokes or even still having the same kind of jokes anyways.
    • Speaking about that dub, the one that was released on the 3DS eShop is way closer to the original Japanese version than the Dox Kids dub, even though it was the newer episodes released at that time.
  10. Great theme song, especially the Japanese original as it sound catchy.
    • In fact there's not just one that exist but plenty of them were created after the original 90s theme song, such as the 2011 one, and those new theme song are just as great if not better.
    • The French dub theme song is different from the original but it is just as good if not even better than the original as it is even catchier, and perfectly describe Shinnosuke character.
  11. It spawned a ton of great video games over the years, especially the GBA, DS and some of the 3DS platformer games and the games are just as good as those tie-in video games of Doraemon.
  12. There's a lot of good/amazing episodes, such as:
    • "Mom's Getting Fat"
    • "House Playing
    • "Mom Wants to Drive"
    • "Mom Takes Driving Lessons
    • "Tidying Up"
    • "Raising Tadpoles"
    • "His Name is Shiro"
    • "Standing and Reading in the Bookstore"
    • "Going for a Ski Trip"
    • "Après-Ski"
    • "Masao's love"
    • "Ways To Avoid Being Late"
    • "Let's Go to a Funeral"
    • "Cleaning Your Ears Feels Good!"
    • "The softball tournament part 1"
    • "The softball tournament part 2"
    • "Dreadful payday!"
    • "Nohara Family's Home Escape Strategy"
  13. It also spawned a lot of films, which most of them are great and unlike the main show, they are mostly adventurous and because of that, it gives the show a new direction of what it can be while still keeping the charm.
  14. For a kid show, it sure isn't afraid to include adult jokes which are great and funny for the most parts, and because of this, this show can be entairtaining for all ages, especially the teens and adults.

Bad Qualities

  1. This show is infamous for having tons of sexual content and inappropriate moments, especially for Shinnosuke's butt jokes, which is inappropriate for children. Some of those scenes are so bad that several countries have stopped airing the series on television due to being controversial, notably for Indonesian television channels like RCTI. Thankfully, these content are censored or cut out (almost) entirely from several of the dubs, specifically those aimed at kids.
    • Also, sometime there's way too much alcohol references despite being a kid show, especially in the earlier episodes, while some kids shows such as the 1979 Doraemon series (especially the episode "Drinking Lid, which was howewer worse than this show alcohol references) and Ojamajo Doremi had some alcool references (in which howewer it only appear 1 or 2 times in that entire show), they aren't that problematic and are still tame, but here it is show a lot, especially with Shinnosuke dad drinking beers in lot of old episodes.
      • But to be fair though, back then it wasn't really problematic, but in the 2010s it became more problematics.
        • Also, thankfully the newer episodes does not references it that much, and are slightly less innapropriate than the old ones because of the fact that most of the new episodes mostly focus on Shinnosuke himself.
    • Even worse, some of the dubs didn't censored those that much, such as the Fox Kids dubs that still contain a lot of innapropriate moments such as the aforementioned butt jokes.
    • Even worse, because of the ton of innapropriate moments, the show is said to be aimed at teens rather than kids in some websites, despite the show being targeted to kids (even though it would fit more with the teens and adults).
      • Speaking about that, it even aired on Adult Swim as an uncensored version, which clearly mean that this show wasn't really mean for childrens.
  2. While good, the animation of the earlier episodes still countain some animation errors, although they're hardly noticeable.
  3. While great, the Fox Kids dubs are a bit censored and because of that, it isn't truly faithful to the Japanese original, although it somehow escaped some of the most innapropriate moments.
  4. The characters at times can be unlikable, such exemples include:
    • Shinnosuke, while a great and overall funny character, he can still be very unlikable in some episodes such as in one episode where he jump on Nene mother since the latter though that his mom wanted to change childrens, which was also one of the times where Shinnosuke mom is unlikable.
    • Shinnosuke mom, while relatable, can be very unlikable toward Shin-Chan and would sometime punish him unfairly, the worst thing that she ever did was when she wanted to change Shinnosuke with Nene (which thankfully does not happen), and this was also what made that episode bad.
  5. Like all great shows, it still had some bad episodes due to having a lot of episodes produced over the years, such as:
    • "Swap Mom"
    • "I Want a High Grade Swimming Suit"
    • "The Girls of 34C" (The lowest rated episode on IMDb)
    • "Bathing With Mom" (One of the most innapropriate episode of the whole show, and not in a good way)
    • "I Hate Green Peppers"
  6. Because of having over 1000+ episodes, it is very hard to watch the entire series, and also some of the episodes are impossible to found because most of the new ones are not on streaming sites yet.
  7. Like Doraemon (both the 1979 and 2005 series), the dubs made for this show are mostly incomplete and had only 100 of the episodes dubbed for most of them, it doesn't help that the airing order in all dubs were changed and it could confuse some peoples.

Critical Reception

The series received positive reviews by audiences and fans who praised how faithful it was to the manga, and also founded the series to be very funny, though the show got criticized for having a ton of innapropriate moments.

Howewer, some peoples, especially parents, disliked the series due to the innapropriate moments and this even caused controversy.

Controversy

A Hindi dub of the anime has aired on Hungama TV in India since June 19, 2006.[1] There were complaints from parents over the main character's behavior and the attitudes exhibited towards elders on the show, both of which were seen as a negative influence on children.[2] The series was banned in October 2008 by the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on account of heavy nudity.[3] After many requests from fans, the show returned to Hungama TV in 2009, albeit censored; scenes containing nudity were cut, and there were several changes to the dialogue to remove adult humor and better appeal to Indian culture.[4]

A Portuguese dub of the anime has also aired on Biggs, with the segment of the 165th episode "Dad's Hospitalized Life" causing major controversy in 2016, due to a scene where the nurses examine Shinnosuke's anus, and compliment it, all while he acts and looks uncomfortable. Due to complaints from parents over concerns that the show was promoting softcore child pornography, the Portuguese Media Regulatory Authority ordered that the show should only be aired after 10:30 PM.[5] Eventually, the show was slowly faded out of Biggs' schedule, and from Portuguese television. Later, the show returned to television through Portugal's Fox Comedy,[6] though on a limited run, with the show being removed from Fox Comedy Portugal after a few months.

Regulators from Indonesia, Vietnam & South Korea have also described the show as 'borderline pornography.
